I have just purchased a new laptop (Tosh A205 S4639). This operates on Vista Ultimate, which I am finding a real pain. All my Microsoft software runs fine, however most of my engineering software has compatibility problems despite asking to run as though XP. I have two hard drives built in(C: 110 GB and D:149GB) is it possible to install XP on my D Drive? Any advise?
Thanks

Hi.

I understand your situation.
You can have two operating systems (vista & xp both).
First you need to restart the machine using WindowsXP boot cd.
While installing the winxp system, it asks in which driver are you gonna install
In this option you should select the different driver in case D driver.
It will perfectly fine to use both winxp and vista.
I am currently using both systems.

Hope you enjoy both system!

Yes, it is easy. You do not need to use the second drive for the operating system.

Since this is already on Vista, install XP and make it a Dual Boot. What does that mean? XP will also be put on your C: boot drive and at the initial start-up you will be given a choice on which Operating system you want to run. You can put your programs on your D: drive so they are doubled up on the C:

If you have 2 seperat Hard Drives Installed on your Machine and they are for Instance C;// has Vista and D,E,orF, has nothing on it then yes you can Install XP on it and you must remember that you will always have compatability problems when trying to use older software on a newer version or a new operating system.
Simply select the drive and Install it.
If it is external then it will be different.

yes that could be possible try installing xp first then vista then choose new installation then finish the setup there you go a doubled system i just don't know if you can install seperate OS in each HD for the reason that during boot the primary HD always comes first which is C or so on.

Yeah partition your Hdd. You can stick an operating system up on each and be able to select one or the other at start-up. Partition Magic is a decent product to do this job

the two hard drives built in (110gb and 149gb)are result of partition.1 devided by 2,if not, there are two seperated hard drives....(C:DRIVE-IS THE MASTER ONE ,THAT HOSTS THE OPERACTIVE SYSTEM SUCH AS VISTA OR XP AND D:DRIVE-IS THE SLAVE ONE USED FOR STOREGE.......WHEN HAVING 2 OPERACTIVE SYSTEMS BOTH ARE HOSTED ON DRIVE C:)THE OPTIONAL SYSTEM IS GIVEN TO YOU WHEN THE COMPUTER IS SWICHED ON,DEPENDIG ON YOU WHAT SYSTEM TO USE.YOU GO THROUGH THE ARROWS THEN PRESS ENTER.
