I told a guy friend of mine that sometimes I wish I was the right girl for him. He responds by saying "well we live in different cities, I have done the long distance thing before and hated it." What should I do? I backed off and quit contacting him yet he still contacts me

Be friends with him, which is what he seems to want. If you two are compatible enough to consider long-distance dating, you could be life-long friends instead.

Are you his friend? or do you want more and not interested in just being friends?
I understand what he is saying about the long distance thing, its hard to do. Do you know for sure he'd want to date you if you lived in the same city?
If he's your friend, continue contacting him, just start dating local guys. You'll see soon enough if he's interested in more or just being your friend too.
