I just recieved a free upgrade for vista (came with my brothers new laptop), But I have alot of programs running on my xp. If i upgrade, can I still use alot of my games and apps for XP on vista.
And also, does anyone know if I would have to reinstall all my apps, or will it automatically be on vista.
Please dont answer with what you think, but with facts. Thank you.

Most XP programs will work with VISTA, however, games are a different story many are not vista compatible.

To see what will happen Run the VISTA Advisor program.. it will tell you what will and wont work.

If you upgrade you won't have to re-install ALL applications but you may need various drivers. If your PC is very new as you say and you have a least 1GB (2GB is highly suggested) then you could go ahead with the upgrade.

As for Applications, it will be somewhat trial and error. MOST 'normal' application will run fine but you mentioned games which is where Vista is running behind. Many games won't work yet.

Two thing I ran into with Vista. I had to run Quicken 2005 'as administrator' and I can no longer get drivers for my HP scanner which is circa 1999 but still works great with XP.

Personally, I suggest you wait unless you really need Vista or if you have lots of patience with PCs. You will have issues with Vista 99% guaranteed. If you free upgrade expires, you may want to save the $$ and go for it.

It depends.

Some games/applications built for XP do work - but in the long run most don't.

When I got Vista, some of my games like BF2142 didn't work.
But if it's an application - try looking on the manufacturers website and most likely they should have an update for it that works with Vista.

Download the Vista Upgrade Advisor. It will tell you if you have any programs that are not compatible with Vista. Quite a few programs are not compatible with Vista.
