supposing for a moment that the rapture actually WAS real, would it necessarily be a bad thing for human civilisation? Kent Hovind, Pat Robertson and their ilk would magically disappear. Wouldn't this be heaven on earth? Would it really be that bad?

The Rapture ripped off that show the 4400 on USA network. It was a cool concept but somehow it made for a crappy show. I guess it's a lot like the Rapture.

Well, you are half right. After the rapture their will be 3 and a half years of perfect(False) Peace, then all hell will break lose, but it will be too late for those who are Left Behind, because the Holy Spirit will be in Heaven with us, and He is the only One that can lead your heart to Jesus.

It's what happens after the church is raptured that you need to worry about. It's not going to be heaven on earth, quite the opposite.
