I just read this, here is a quote from the article, "KEY RECEIVER: NFL Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice was feeling the pressure Sunday morning.
Named the Grand Marshall for the race, Rice, who caught so many clutch passes in tight situations during his football career, was nervous about delivering the traditional ``Gentlemen, start your engines'' line.
``I'm truly just looking forward to the race right now and saying those four famous words,'' Rice said. ``I have brought out so many coaches to work with me, I don't want to blow this. I have so many guys depending on me.''..........What is all that? "Ihave brought in so many coaches to work with me." ????????? How can you mess up on those four words?

I was at a loss when I read that too. I'm not sure why he would need coaches. Although I thought Montana-Rice was some of the best football back in the day, I have to ask, "How many times has Rice been hit in his lifetime?" Maybe his brains a little scrambled! Who knows. I would be really nervous in front of all those people as well. Could just be the media hyping up another part of the weekend.

Hmmm didn't know they had coaches for that, but I sure am glad he took the time to get one!
You asked, "How can you mess up on those four words?" Uh hello people do it all the time, President George W Bush comes to mind in an instant! I cannot stand it when Grand Marshalls get up there to the mic and meekly say those words. These four words should be growled like a lion, I wanna feel it in my gut when they say it!
Gentlemen-this should be asked as a taunt, as if to say will you or won't you play by the rules!
Start
Your
ENGINES!!!-out comes the roar! This is where I wanna see a snarl across the Grand Marshalls face, the look of a warrior chief sending out his men to battle!!!
His words should match the roar of the engines that are about to fire up at his command, you don't get charged up to go to battle with some pansy a$$ command!
UGH and the worse are those old ladies that almost ask the command, "Gentlemen start your engines? hee hee" GAD Makes me wanna slap them!!!
SO I APPLAUDE YOU MR. RICE! JOB WELL DONE!

Last season Nickolus Cage totally screwed up those four words. I love Cage as an Actor; but he should be banned for life from saying "gentlemen start your engines"; for the way he blew those four words.
Rice's nervousness and recieving coaching for his moment at the track shows his respect for NASCAR and it's Fans. I admire what Rice has done and applaud him for it.
Oh, and the best "gentlement start your engines"; have to give that to Matthew McCanahay at the 06 Daytona 500. That is the way you're suppose to do it.

That is one of the major reasons I don't come here that often anymore. If I want little children to call me names, I'll go to visit my nephews. Between the CHILDREN and the TROLLS, it just isn't fun anymore. Post an answer that someone doesn't like, it gets reported (by groups, or people with multiple accounts), the appeal process is a joke. I have had answers removed for a YES or NO question, because YES or NO answers are not permitted!!!!??????

It is possible to screw it up. Reggie Jackson said "Gentlemaen, light 'em up" at a Busch race in Kansas City. I think I heard that one other time on TV, whether it was some other series than Nextel Cup I can't remember. I think what Jerry was probably practicing was the cadence or pace of those four words with the guy that he had to say it with.

There's a big difference between running with a ball and speaking before thousands of people. It's entirely possible that he was just a little tongue tied.
