Absolutely not. Mandolin is a fine instrument if played well. If it is not played well, it is no more annoying than violin or saxophone, or any other instrument that is capable of creating a strident pitch when handled incorrectly. I appreciate the fact that everyone needs to vent now and then however. When you get over it, listen to some Dave Grisman, Sam Bush, or Peter Ostroushko. I'm not looking to convert you or anything, but these three might just open a beam of light into that closed mind.

If you does not want some music, you can choose another type of music, but you can not forbid another music types.
Besides i love a mandolin of my country. The music of Peru are really nice, and it is a very different style to play a mandolin that those of North America for example. (but it can be not exactly the same instrument)

I can't see why ! Everyone has their own liking for certain sounds, I don't like bagpipes but I don't think they should be outlawed, thousands of people do like them, what do you have against the mandolin !
