I think he was instantly killed. I feel sorry for him, but the lesson form this can be that you don't do what seems to be right or instinctual, but you do what God commanded (in this case NOT to touch the ark)

David learned a painful lesson
The cart was wobbling and the ark almost fell in the dirt.. Some guy trying to help, thought it would be worse to touch the dirt which never sinned than his hands which did... and the result... bad..truthfully...he may has well touched a 1 million volt power line... some also made the bad choice of looking inside the ark at that time and they died..
contrare to holywood depictions of the ark..
In Numbers 6, the ark was supposed to be covered with the viel of the holy of holies and carried on the shoulders of special Levites... not thrown on a ox cart... you never are supposed to look on the ark... it is supposed to be vieled
next time David would bring the ark to Jerusalem and he would take the first steps dancing, sacrificing and bringing it in honor to Jerusalem
we all have to 'touch' the 'more than the ark' someday... and go to stand before God and we will either try to touch God covered witht he mercies bought by the cross or we will stand on our own and sizzle...

The person killed was Uzzah. Rashi (the 10th century commentator) states that Uzzah should have known that no matter how much the cart swayed, the ark would not fall, since when it was carried by people, it would carry the people across rivers.

Its the ark of the covenant. An arch is an architectural feature of a building. According to scripture the guy was struck down dead. Its one of the sweeter stories in scripture.

God struck him down for breaking his petty law, according to the story.
It's amazing that the book is still so popular. But religious superstition is a virus-like meme.

Whatever God says does not leave his mouth without it returning to it. It means that if God says something, he Means it. No idle threats or breaking of promises. He will not recant his words cause it suits him.
