For the most part, yes, although God was EXTREMELY DISPLEASED with David for the murder of Uriah and the theft of his wife. If you will recall, the punishment for these actions was severe!
David could screw up royally (being the king and all), but when challenged by God with his actions, his repentence was genuine. I think it was the simplicity of his heart that appealed to God. His married life, however, sucked, and he seemed to be a rotton father-figure.

Accepting that he was a man after God's heart despite his mistakes is illuminating as to God's standard of justice. Humility before his greatness and mercy is in order. 1 Kings 15:3 says: "He committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been."

It was because he had a great heart and loved God (Psalm 18:1). He didn't take God's love and provision for granted and constantly praised Him. He trusted Him in everything and it was his magnificent faith which made him able to slay Goliath. He was lacking in arrogance and never lost his sense of relying on God for his needs. When he realised the enormity of his sin, he repented deeply and sincerely. Doesn't that really describe today's Christian who struggles to follow God and who is found acceptable in the Beloved?

For all have sinnen and fallen short of the Glory of God. (Romans 1:16)
God loves everybody and David did try to do good and asked for forgiveness. That forgiveness is offered to everyone, even murderers.

Dunno.
Maybe God is also a murdered and a fornicator?
Or maybe he likes murderers and fornicators?
Which makes most sense to you?

Putting all his (David's) sins aside, he was the most humble among young Israelites during his teenage years - and that why he was crowned as king by the prophet Samuel.

because the writer who wrote this was employed by King David, and as you said, David was not a very gentle man.

I don't see the dilemma there. People have been getting screwed in the name of God for thousands of years.
