I'm from the UK and am going to visit my boyfriend in the US. We were hoping to visit Canada. Can I cross the border if I am visiting the US on the visa waiver program ie just a normal tourist visa?

I had no problems at all, simply had to show my passport at the border crossing, just the same as entering any country from another. (Although there was a bit of a wait as there was a queue and nobody seemed to be in a hurry!). Coming back into the USA, was much quicker. It should also be noted that those travelling on a British passport can normally enter Canada without a visa. Visit the links below for lots of info. Have a great holiday.

You can get into Canada without a Visa on a British Passport. If you intend to return to the USA you need to be sure you can get back on the Waiver system. I have a vague memory of it only being available at Airports not land crossings if you drive. Also when you leave the USA even though you may be going back in a couple of days, make sure you hand in your card that you have left the country otherwise you will eventually listed as an illegal immigrant when that Visa date expires
I would check the American embassy web site

From what I know (without searching), yes, you should be able to cross over from the U.S. to Canada on a Tourist Visa. I would assume that it wouldn't matter since any U.S. residents can cross the U.S./Canada border freely without the need of a passport or anything like that. Since your Visa allows you to vacation here in the United States, visiting Canada should not offer any complications.

On a side-note, enjoy your visit to this country...glad to have ya!!! I hope to, some day, vacation in the U.K. I hear it's really nice.

Take care!

If you are travelling on a British passport, you can enter the US & Canada without a visa, (Visa Waiver Program.) IF your boyfriend is a US citizen, then no visa is required for him to enter Canada as well.**

UK citizens do not require a visa to enter Canada.

US citizens do not require a visa to enter Canada.

If you want to leave USA and enter Canada, and later return to USA you should have a multiple-visit visa for USA.
