It means to let someone address you in a way you would not like (offending, simply stupid, impolite etc)
Women suffer more from it than man I guess - e.g. when some drunk guy in a bar starts speaking to her in a way she does not like. You can imagine the situation, I think.
It does not necessarely mean that someone calls you stupid.

Anmachen alone usually means, trying to pick someone up. In a slang way. Dumm anmachen would be like using a stupid pick up line. In a way that is really uncomfortable for the person being addressed.

to let people make you stupid is the literal translation,
it means accepting people making you out for stupid. nto countering them with enough wit, even though you have it.
