The breed was developed for hunting vermin in the area around the border of England and Scotland.

They were used for fox hunting, but there were other breeds that did better at that

Borders were used like most of the terrier breeds to go to earth after vermin. They were bred to be an all purpose ratting dog or used to make the kill after a hunt. Unable to compete with faster more aggressive terrier breeds like the Jack Rusell or Bull Terrier or Staffordshire, it has never been a very popular breed. Still they are very "gamey" and arent suited for a household with small animals unless you are willing to consciously spend time training it to understand that it must not be aggressive with household pets. If it "scurries" - they will chase it. Like all terriers they are quick learners and somewhat stubborn natured being very singleminded at whatever they are engaged in. But I've handled a few and found them good dogs - with a slightly less pronounced terrier attitude. There was a genetic predisposition for seizures in the breed in the 80's - I cant speak for now.

All terriers are hunting dogs used for digging out rabbits, foxes etc which live underground - from the French - la terre meaning the ground. Border terriers were bred around the English/Scottish borders for that purpose.

Border Terriers are friendly, smart, energetic and playful. They can make good family pets as they are generally good with children. If their owners cannot give them a lot of attention, they are best kept with other dogs of similar temperament. Some members of the breed make a highly effective alternative to a doorbell, due to their sharp hearing and the distinctive frenzied barking that results when they hear someone approaching the door.

Usually when puppies are first taken to their home, they, like other dogs have an opinion on the owner/owners. They especially like jumping a lot, and a lot of times, when owners first buy their Border Terrier they sometimes find that they are woken up by their dog licking them in their bed! Some Borders like to lick.

Borders are magnificent little dogs. i've got continuously had mutt terriers yet needed a terrier which may well be sturdy with my older (and particularly tetchy) dogs, so researched online lots and got here up with the BT. I had a ***** so I have been given yet another, and he or she is amazingly small for the breed, being basically approximately 9 inches on the shoulder. I have been given a doggy so as that the older dogs might have a sparkling run at being the boss and it labored brilliantly. The BT is now the main friendly, sociable, in basic terms right behaved little doggy ever. She grow to be (and is) slightly obdurate, yet learns VERY quickly - quicker than the different dogs i've got owned and is mind-blowing with anybody and different dogs. I took her out frequently and enable large dogs sniff her throughout, which controlled her organic over-self assurance. Now she's advantageous and submissive approximately drawing close different dogs, yet continuously waiting to play whilst they have suggested hi. She's additionally been mind-blowing with sheep and different cattle like horses. My older dogs is solid around sheep and with a good number of treats and compliment, the doggy grow to be ignoring sheep via the age of six months. There are some drawbacks to the breed which you ought to prefer to appreciate approximately as they are minor and quite conquer. a million they ought to be stripped to steer away from laying off. this is rather finished via hand (there are quite a few web pages online which practice you the way and that i've got been given the dangle of it quickly). 2 they are between the few terriers which will run to fat, so attempt to get yours fascinated in chasing a ball as quickly as attainable to income from her walks! 3 They do quite go through interior the warmth, so please evaluate that in case you reside someplace somewhat heat. I stay in England which isn't prevalent for its tropical climate, yet there have been some days this summer season the place my doggy has quite been way too warm. I shop a sprint pool interior the backyard for her to climb into, whether that's something to evaluate. 4 curiously they are large diggers and get away artists yet i've got never had a project with mine. i've got continuously enjoyed having mutts yet this little BT has switched over me and that i will never get the rest now! wish you have exciting. :-)

Yes they are ! I used to breed them and work them. Best thing about a BT is though when you take them home from hunting etc they resort back to being good old house dogs ! Great characters too. I love the breed.
PS a good border marks a fox not attack it.

From this site:- http://www.theborderterrierclub.co.uk/
"Its purpose was (and is) to 'bolt' foxes when they 'go to ground'. In other words when foxhounds and the field (horse-riders) in pursuit of the fox stop because the fox has gone into one of its underground lairs, the Border Terrier has to go underground and either 'bolt' (chase out) the fox or stay with it and bark. This is to indicate to those above ground where the fox is located so that they can dig down to their quarry. The Border should not be too forward in attacking the fox underground. Rather he should threaten him and preferably chase him out."

So....Bactowork.....they were not bred to kill anything!! So much for your 30 years experience with terriers!!

Rabbiting and hunting vermin. Be careful when out walking near rabbit holes as they're blooming quick to get down them and then invariably get stuck - had experience unfortunately!!

Border Terriers were & are BRED TO BE ***WORKING TERRIERS****!!!!
Locate, enter VERMIN DENS & *WORK* formidable quarry!

HUNTING is above ground,"WORK" is BELOW!"Work" consists of harassing the vermin to cause in to bolt OR holding it bay until DUG to OR KILLING it in-ground!

That's ENTIRELY DIFFERENT from the "Working GROUP" of breeds!!

I've been hunt/working TERRIERS for 30+ years

See what you get from asking total strangers in cyber-space??? TOTAL CRAP!!

WORKING *TERRIERS* do NOT "dig rabbits out" OR "rat" OR any other of the T-TOTAL *BULL* SPOUTED from the nitwits above.
Hunting/SPORTING terriers *might*.
A real WORKING TERRIER is dog that regularly GOES TO GROUND after FORMIDABLE QUARRY!
Wikipedia is WRITTEN by NITWITS too!

OMG....yet MORE from the "cut & paste" ,crew!!!Hey,NELLI-BEANS:>
I ***HAVE*** (& have HAD *&* am getting ANOTHER!) BORDERS & HUNT/WORK EM!!! THEY ***KILL****!!!
ALL the northern TERRIERS were MEANT TO KILL!!!NOT bolt for the soft southern horsie hunts! KILL their quarry IN GROUND!! & STILL *DO*!
Staffs NEVER were used by hunts, wolfie!!! NEVER! TOO F-ING BIG *&* DOG FIGHTERS!
