I don't believe in long engagement so I prefer not more than a year. <*-*>

Seven years?? Maybe you mean they've been dating and/or engaged for a total of 7 years. The whole point of getting engaged is that you are ready to be married! You shouldn't still need to get to know each other! Now, being engaged and planning the wedding and marriage will mean learning new things, but there shouldn't be any surprises if you already know each other well enough to commit to getting married. We will be engaged for 10 months. I would recommend anywhere from 6 months to just over a year to plan the wedding as you will need time for all the arrangements, but don't want to drag it out too long as planning can be stressful!
Good luck!

It depends on the couples. Some are engaged for 1 year others are engaged for 10 years. I think that a good engagement would be about 2-4 years that way you really get to know the person.

Wait 7 years? I have never heard that! I think being engaged and waiting longer than two years sort-of defeats the purpose of an engagement! I think less than 18 months is okay before the wedding, though personally I would say ideal time is 6-12 months from the engagement.

Wow, where do you live, I have NEVER heard that you should be engaged for 7 years before marriage. There is no right or wrong about this, some people leave it for years, others marry within a matter of weeks or months. We set a date 6 months after we got engaged

I'll be engaged for nearly 2 years when I get married. I think it depends on when the couple is ready. An engagement has a lot of pressures and people expect you to get married and that's sort of sad. Like you should be ready the day you get engaged, but it's really a time to openly discuss marriage and the possibilities. I was ready the day I got engaged though, it just happened that we needed the extra two years for other geographical reasons.

I was engaged a year and hten got married, dated 3 years before that. I don't see the point in looong engagements, I mean really all your doing is dating with a fancier title, I think if your not ready to have a wedding within 2 years tops of getting engaged then you don't need to get engaged....it deminishes the importance of the big step alltogether, jsut keep dating till your seriously ready for the next step!

Is there really a normal? Some wait for a year others longer. The engagement period depends on the couple. Also some consider the time the couple dated prior to the engagement.

Me and my husband were together for 3 years before we got engaged. We were in no hurry in setting a date , but I fell pregnant and we decided to set a date when the baby was born, so we ended up being engaged for less than 2 years. I think 7 years is too long, but it depends on circumstances and affording the wedding of your dreams.

If you have dated two or three years, then eight months to a year is plenty long enough to plan a wedding. The reason to get engaged is that it's the promise to get married, so shortly after you get engaged, a date should be set.

Engagements used to last about 12 months. Now they can last anywhere from 1 month to years and years. It just really depends on your personal situation as not every time-frame fits every couple. The optimal time would be 12 months to allow for adequate wedding planning, but the national average is actually closer to 18-20 months.
