I totally relate to you! It drives me nuts! I just sort of take a small step back and raise my hand to shake hands instead, and smile. No, you're not selfish. People shouldn't assume that just because you're in a church that you want that type of closeness with everybody. You're there to be close to God. =)

No, you aren't. To really say something could be awkward, so I'd try to get the point across nonverbally first. Cross your arms, do something with your hands, or have your arms full. You could initiate a non-huggy gesture, like reaching for a handshake, but depending on the would-be hugger's determination, that could just be taken as an invitation to a shake'n'pull hug.

The hugs don't bother me because my church is like family to me. However, I do know fewer hugs happen when I'm trying to keep up with a crazy preschooler, carrying his backpack, and digging through my purse.

If none of that works, or you just want to be frank, simply say "I'm not really a comfortable hugger, but how are you doing?" That should be all the explanation needed, and it doesn't sound like a rejection.

Everyone has their own sense of personal space. Take a step back and smile, extend your hand and say....
ie "Lovely to see you!...or...How are you today! I am just not a hugger,"
After a while, people will get the idea and shake your hand and save the hugs for others....mostly...you won't stop them all. There are determined huggers out there!!

no you're not being selfish...each person has his/her own feelings and thoughts regarding the hugging matter...no offense but i think you should consider them..when you go to church you go there in the purpose of serving and worshipping God..Any matters should be disregarded because you must focus on serving to him...Them hugging you is just to let you feel brotherly love...in church you are with each other as brothers and sisters,,family i mean...but if you want to avoid it because you are annoyed...no offense but i refer to call it as not a valid reason..

i only go to church when people i know die so hugging is envitable. they are probably just friendly. try moving away from the crowd and get out of there quickly once the service is over.

I think they are just trying to be friendly. They are also offering you friendship and wanting to share warmth.

I would say don't make a big deal of it, but do introduce yourself and expect them to introduce themselves. I don't think you're being selfish. You have a comfort zone that is obviously different from theirs.
