I have worked in an office for 9 years and now would like a career change. I would like to work as a housekeeper or as a Chamber Maid in a hotel. I am capable of the skills but have no previous training in this area or references to support me yet - only my office related work - how do I train or get a job to start me on this career path? I have looked on places like gumtree but all applicants need generally at least 2 refs in this line of work or experience......but how do you start out?! Please help! Thanks!

Apply directly to the hotels of your choice. Be honest, and say you haven't experience in this field of work, but can provide references. You'd have to be prepared to train under an experienced operative. A housekeepers job does require experience, so you'd have to work your way up to that position.

No, you are not being unreasonable. I am surprised that there are people saying you are. If you had a CLEAR agreement in place when you started about what your responsibilities would be at this job, then it is not OK for the family to change your responsibilities. They could approach you and ask you to do more. You could negotiate a higher salary or some other perk. The uniform thing sounds pretty weird. Again, this should have been discussed when you were hired. If you feel that you can get a better job, then you should start looking. These people do sound difficult to deal with. Unfortunately though, it is not uncommon for nannies to be taken advantage of. I strongly recommend that you get into another line of work. Or that you get a nannying-related qualification so you can work at an established nursery, where you'll be treated more consistently. Good luck.

I'd recommend getting married - you get paid slightly less but with any luck he may feed you and give you a bit of spending money each week.

In all seriousness, if you want a career change, look to something with longer term possibilities - how about something in the environmental or ecology fields? You may be able to utilitse your office skills to get you started in the industry, and move on from there.

Brown Eyes, stick to what you know. Hotel and hospitality work isn't all it's cracked up to be. Long hours and low pay. My hubby was a chef in his local hotel. He would have stayed there if it wasn't for the lousy pay! But then, he wouldn't have met me!
