Or did some other very bad stuff. Then you lost your memory and ended up in a place where no-one knew you. So you had no memory of that happening. So you become a good citizen and get a job and get married and settle down. You get born again or you become a good Catholic or a good atheist or whatever and you live a blameless life.

Then the police catch up with you and you are genuinely puzzled. You have no memory of what you did and you don't feel you should be held responsible. But they do.

Well, maybe you know what I'm getting at. Karma, reincarnation....

Is that how it works?

My question was in response to the view that is sometimes put forward that there is something "unjust" about karma. People who believe that are sometimes the same people who believe that God is going to let babies burn for ever because Adam and Eve stole a piece of fruit LOL

There are suggestions of reincarnation in the Bible. Some people thought John the Baptist was the reincarnation of Elijah. Jesus was supposed to be a reincarnation of someone or other. Also, the onlookers at Jesus' healing of the man born blind assumed he might have sinned to deserve it. Now, how could he have sinned before he was born, unless you believe in reincarnation?

LOL... yes thats pretty much how Karma works.

Assuming he had been an awful person and remembered each detail vividly and was caught by authorities, he would be trialed in a court of law and punished severely

but

As your story goes, he lost his memory, and changed his life around. Whether he remembered it or not, evidence of his crime exists, but while he is standing trial in court, the jury, seeing he change of attitude and having become a benevolent member of society might STILL find him guilty ( as they say in CSI - follow the evidence ) his sentence might be reduced based on that.

No Crime goes unpunished, remorse and repentence is the first step of purifyingour negative karma.... there are still 107 steps to go :)

Add: As for the Bible not teaching about reincarnation.... maybe it doesn't ... but it does hint it. Wasn't John the Baptist supposed to be the return of Prophet Elijah? Sounds pretty muchlike reincarnation to me.

Add2: The sins of the father does not fall upon the son. Ones own karma is one's own to bear. The courts are not gonna send the man's children, wife or family to the gallows for the crimes that he had commited.

Karma is what goes around comes around.
Reincarnation is when your soul is reborn but not necessarily in the form of a human being. You can be any living thing.
The example you just gave doesn't represent either.
Say the person killed a lot of people, then an example of karma could be that their own loved ones get killed. Reincarnation and karma I think are tied together. So if you are a murderer and you become reincarnated, you'll probably be reborn into a human being that will one day get murdered.

A murderer is a murderer, once a life has been taken justice must be served.
Just because there is a memory lapse it does not excuse the fact, it would be impossible to live a blameless life.
Well thats just my opinion, anyway.
