Nassau and Suffolk Counties are both nice areas with small pockets of not so nice areas. The problem for you probably will be housing. Most who live on Long Island live in houses. Very few apartments. Where they are apartments usually those neighborhoods aren't so nice. To find a place read Newsday on line. So your best move would be to move in to someone's furnished basement or upstairs. Some housings have second dwellings.

Nearly every town has at least a "nice" part. The problem is the cost of living here is extremely high. Nassau county is great if you want to live within a 20-30 minute train ride of the city. Suffolk is where I am from and being biased I prefer it. However, I live nearly on the border of Suffolk and Nassau so I'm within fifteen minutes of the beach and fire island and (without traffic) a 30 -40 minute drive into Manhattan...the train takes 1 hour, no matter what time of day and is the best option.

I like Nassau county better but probably because I'm biased because that's where I'm from originally. Are you looking to rent or buy? Someone above listed neighborhoods to avoid and I agree with them. It is also true that there are not many rentals in LI. Long Beach is a beautiful city and if you are looking to rent it has a very large rental market although the prices are very high for rental as well as for buying. Good luck! I think you will love LI as long as you have the money for it.

I'm from the UK, but I lived on LI for 5 years in Nassau County in Roslyn Harbour. We were right next to a golf course, so it was quiet, buses were about every 15/20 minutes.I loved it!

I prefer Nassau County just because it's closer to the city, and easier to get off the island when you want to. North Shore is nice, but really expensive. South shore has good areas too, such as Bellmore-Merrick, but also has some spotty areas like Amityville. All in all though, LI is pretty decent, just really expensive.

Valley Stream is nice not too close or far from the city. Be prepared to pay prices for houses unless you live way out there. You can get ok prices house if you live in the not so good areas. Stay away from hempstead.

Its all quiet and clean. In Nassau, stay away from Uniondale, Hempstead, Roosevelt. Otherwise, Good luck because if the house prices don't make you puke, the taxes will
