Honestly, because deep within the soul of every human being is the knowledge of God. Most atheists (actually, most human beings) are not comfortable with the notion that just maybe God really does exist and really does love them. This discomfort causes people to either look inward and see themselves as they truly are (lost) or it causes them to look at churches and find ugly faults in them (and there's plenty of it to find). So they choose (yes choose) to harden their hearts and turn their backs on what they deep (deeeep) down know to be true. If anyone dares to expose what they've chosen to bury and cover up with head knowledge, then tensions start to rise.
Many things in Christianity can't be explained with science or logic. They must instead be embraced by faith regardless of comprehension. Case in point, a core belief in Christianity: God becomes a man and voluntarily allows himself to be put to physical death (a very slow and painful death) just to pay the penalties for the sins of us all. This event is a historically proven fact. But the motive behind why God did what he did must be embraced regardless of logic.
If a man walks toward quicksand, and another man warns him about it, the man heading toward the quicksand hates the man who warned him. By golly, he's going to make it to his final destination regardless of what that other stupid man says. After all, it's a bright sunny day and there can't possibly be quicksand on this trail.
The lack of comprehension or scientific data does not negate the truth.

Usually the same thing that motivates a "Christian" to tear down Atheism.
It's not what they "do", it's what they "believe".
Many Atheists perform the same "altruistic" acts the Christians do...but many Christians believe that, because an Atheist does not believe in a God or the Bible, that they do not believe in human kindness, etc.
Why would a Christian want to tear down an Atheist?
Is it because Chrisitans believe they are better because they have God on "their side"? Does it accomplish anything positive?
So the criticism continues on both sides, and neither "side" is any better than the other. One believes one thing, the other something else. But, there are folks on both "sides" that just won't let it drop, they won't be happy until the other side either changes their beliefs or they're all dead.
It was a round world the last time I looked.

I put down Christianity, not the individual, because the system is entirely backwards. Of course I know some good comes from the Bible, there's a lot of good advice that can be dished out like don't be a hypocrite. At the same time a lot of evil comes from it, too. Killing innocent children and condoning rape is pretty disgusting, but it was permitted by your god. How can that be possible when apparently the Christian god is omnibenevolent? What kind and loving god insists that you must fear it?

The same way that you believe happiness will be achieved through accepting Christianity the atheist believes that the best thing for them is to be without belief in a god. They want to share their knowledge with other people just like you do.
Unfortunately the mistake that is made is in the attack. It is silly for many reasons to tear down someones religion. The biggest reason being that even if Christianity was not good it still would not make atheism good. People who seek to promote atheism should do so for its own virtues and through the lack of virtue in Christianity. Not only will many Christians not be impressed but also it will be completely lost on anyone who is not of the faith the person is tearing down.
So to truly answer your question at its core the reason why atheists tear down other beliefs is because they feel strongly about their beliefs but have not learned a positive way to show other people. In their misguided attempt to try and show other people what they see for themselves they make a terrible mistake burning bridges by tearing other people down to move atheism forward.
Just remember that not all atheists are evil and wish to take down Christianity. Just like there are evil people of every denomination and ethnicity there are evil atheists. Just make sure not to lump them all together or your no better then them.

The only real advantage of disbelieving in God is that you can sleep in on Sundays and you can do whatever you want assuming it isn't against any of the laws of man (which mostly came from the bible anyway) without fear of repercussion (although they've yet to prove that there is none).
So they do their best at showing others "good will" by informing them of their reasons for disbelieving so that they too may share in these meager advantages.
I don't really know. I'd say it's just as likely that they just hate anyone that thinks differently from them.

i personally, and i'm sure other people would agree, am not trying to get back at christians. I just want christians to see outside of the box. I'm okay with Christians believing that they are made of dirt Et cetera, i just don't want them to go against things that would be beneficial to everyone, just because the bible says it's wrong. They can believe it in their hearts and for their own personal lives, but don't vote against stem cell research and same sex marriage and abortion. Don't vote against things that don't make an impact on your life and make harmful ones on others.

First, if you're so proud to be a christian, then why did you put G-d instead of God?
Second, I don't try to tear down christianity, I just don't want to hear it, and if someone preaches to me after I tell them politly to back off, then I go off on the person, not the religion. I personally believe that people should believe in what they choose to believe, but they should leave those alone that that chooses to believe something else.

John I am not an atheist.
It is not Christianity so much as it is Christians. Any religion that claims to be the only way to God comes built in with feelings of superiority.
I see it here every single day. You are going to hell for this or you are going to hell for that. But the whole concept of hell makes no sense. Why would a supreme deity possess the human flaws of ego and jealousy? It makes no sense. Why would God send over 60% of all the humans on earth right now to hell because they bought the wrong religious book? It makes no sense.
No one will EVER make me believe that there are not many roads to God. I don't give God flaws like jealousy. No one will ever convince me that God would condemn anyone for who sleeps in their bed with whom and if there is a marriage involved. It makes no sense.
Look up Yeshua ben Yoseph. An Essene Rabbi who I believe Paul used, a long with the story of Mithra to fabricate Christianity. The holy trinity that christians are so keen on was not even established until the Council of Nicea. Over 300 years after Jesus supposedly died.
But if you or anyone thinks that the bible makes sense to you, than go for it. Just please keep the bible out of our laws. As in gay marriage. Don't feel that you are superior to others because they believe or don't believe. It you show respect you will receive respect.

What has light to do with darkness? That goes for anyone that trys to tear down someone elses beliefs... some Christians are worse than non-believers in this area because they profess to believe but do this anyway. They are Christians in name only. A house divided against itself will fall...that goes for churches also.

What motivates people to denigrate the motives of others while seeing their own motives as pure? You try to convince people that your belieifs are right and you see yourself as a saint out to aid humanity. Other people try to convince people that their beliefs are right and you assume, because you don't share those beliefs, that it must be out of petty spite and jealousy at how noble your own views are. Frankly, that is one of the types of thinking that most motivates people to argue against your way of seeing the world.
Atheists figure that rational thinking is of greater benefit than magical thinking. They have seen centuries of backwardness where there could have been progress because people were more interested in arguing and killing over which unverifiable supernatural claim was the One Truth. We'd rather that people stop distracting themselves, and worrying themselves pointlessly, with mystical conjecture that can, at best, only be hopeful opinion. There's so much to learn about the actual, natural universe. So if I were to be as parochial and petty as you I could ask: what motivates fundamentalists to try to drag us back into the mire of their superstition?
But the truth is, I understand that different people see the world differently and everybody advocating their own views is actually a good thing. I don't have to pretend that everyone secretly agrees with me.

"Im passionate about helping people build their relationship with G-d and about building and sharing my religion. Thats what motivates me to be on here. I want to see people affected in a positive way."
That's funny, I see it as intentionally spreading ignorance.
"What motivates an athiest to try to tear down Christianity?"
I am not tearring down Christianity. I am promoting logic, facts, and science.
Do you see the dualism in our two positions?
