I was planning to move out but have been asked by my parents not to since my mother works full time plus lots of over time and my fathers poor health... with that being said

I am moving out of my very small room into our garage/family room. The previous owners made it part of the house and sealed off the outside entries and made their own bar (which my parents also used for parties) so the room is insulated and such. So, there is a bar along one of the walls. Everyone tells me to keep it... especially my friends.. they want me to use it as an actual bar.. but I have no desire to do so.. so.. anyone have any ideas as to what I can use it for? I'm a writer and I thought of making it a huge writing area where I can stash all my writing supplies where the alcohol was stocked... but that seems too bland. Any ideas? and any cool/neat room ideas would be awesome. I'll be 24 and I love pink but the walls are dark brown panneling. I've never had a cool room.. always just plain white walls

Sorry, but honestly I would have used it as a bar. ^__^

It's difficult to say without being able to see the bar, but in our house, we dismantled the old bar that was there but left the dropped lighted ceiling and mirrored backspash, creating a kind of ambient area. We had to dismantle it because it was old, no choice. However, it is now a very good kareoke station for us, and there are pictures on the glass shelves which used to hold the liquor.

In your case, the bar will still be there so...... I guess if it is mirrored, I would use it as a makeup area. ^ ^ I find that the special shelves and storage space of a bar is suited to smaller items, such as makeup bottles or jewelery. I don't know, it's hard to say without knowing what it looks like.

I always encourage people to use what they have, looking at it for what it IS, not for what its intended function.

A table can be a desk, a dining surface, a place to decorate. It can also be the "garage" or "roof" of a storage container like a laundry hamper, a shoe rack, or a garbage can or a pet crate.

A dresser full of drawers is storage that you would use for things that are not displayed. It doesn't have to be in a bedroom.

A shelf is storage that you would use to display. It doesn't have to be for books.

So repurposing is a really clever way to be content and meet a tight budget, or to get through a temporary situation.

That bar is a long horizontal surface off the floor. What could you use that for? Anything...you can set it up as office space, kitchen prep space, a dining space...it just depends on how you want it to function. Maybe it is long enough to zone off for all these.

In addition to that, you might consider the area behind the bar to be a perfect area to set up a kitchenette...if there is plumbing and electricity and a sink, you can make a tiny kitchen with a microwave, hot plate, toaster oven, use the sink to wash dishes and brush your teeth, as well as putting in a small fridge (all these if they aren't provided in the current space.) With this equipment, you can do anything (on a smaller scale) that you can do in a full size kitchen. This also makes the bar surface a great place to eat. Serving from the kitchen is simply lifting the plate up and over to the eater.
