Thanks to all of these that took the time and effort to answer and with all the answer "legal" seems to be the most important issue that everyone has brought up.....I guess she's really not right for me...but I guess it won't hurt to be friend at least for now?
Thanks to all again...esp to these who share personal experience

"It is okay", if you don't have sexual intercourse with her. Think about it when your 22 she will be 18 or you'll be 24 and she will be 20 and so on & so on. That's not bad. My Friends mom is 48 and her husband is 54. It all good, go for it.If you met her a few days ago, you should definitely call her before it gets to late. Ask her if she wants to go out to eat, to the beach, or to a sports game. Do something that is fun. Do not do something boring like bowling, putt putt golf, or movie where you cannot get to know each other. Good Luck!!

Oh ya and it's not illegal unless you have sexual intercourse.

Karrah I really have to tell you that your really wrong about all of this. One Age is but a number, If you are 24 and you date a 20 year old that ok right? well then 20 and 16 is the same. You take about the law like you obey everything it tells. And if you do that a little sad. Anyways If the girl doesnt tell her parents. it makes her more mature then telling them. People in this society over judge and make a problem out of things that are not that bad. So what a 20 dating a 16. I'm 20 and i dated a 16 year old before and I'm proud of saying it. We didn't have sex and I didn't force her to do dumb ****. We broke up because of parents and I'm over her because it been like a year. I'm not sure where I'm going with life but if you karrah are only marring a guy that successful and Has a future then you really don't know what love is. I may not have a job or go to school But At least I can say that I know love when I see it. I am applying for a job and soon will be living alone. And Btw the last time I checked There is no age to "move in the real world' because When you go outside you are in the real world. Anyway I would wish you take down your comment because you are only basing your judgement on the law side. One more thing You can't say how long they are going to last because you don't know how far they are going to go. And the laws says having sex is illeagl not dating so therefore they aren't doing anything wrong.

No it's not weird-I was 16 and my husband was 19 when we started dating. We've had a great relationship, and it wasn't a big deal at all because we matched as people regardless of our age. And now that we are older the difference doesn't seem so important.

However, while it might not be weird, it may be illegal depending on the laws in your state. First, see what the age of consent is in your state-in most states it ranges from 16-18. Then, take a look at the statutory rape laws in your state as well. Some states have age laws [anyone 18+ having sex with someone younger than 18 is committing statutory rape] and some states have age gap laws [it doesn't matter your ages as long as you are no more than ____ years apart]. My husband and I were able to have an intimate relationship because I was an independant minor under my own guardianship-sometimes there are loopholes like that in each individual state. It's worth looking because in almost EVERY state16 will get you 20 if you're not within the law.

That being said, statutory rape only applies if you have sex with the person. If you truely like this girl, I would definately talk to her AND talk to her parents-you can date her and not have sex with her, right? As long as you are open about your relationship and you don't break the letter of the law, you will avoid a lot of trouble.

I don't think it's weird because really it is only a 4 year age difference and girls are much more mature than boys mentally. It might be illegal in some states, but in most 16 is age of consent, I wouldn't rush into anything as far as sex, but talking and dating with her parents permission should be okay. This is where a parent should play the deciding factor.

I would not ask her out. The fact is a 16yr.old girl, doesn't have the mind set of an 18 yr.old girl, or someone older. You are 20, and should stick to someone your own age, or at least someone who is legal. This will keep you out of trouble, and definitely give you the chance to meet a girl who shares your interest, and is not going to try to be what you want her to be, which is what usually happens when you date someone that much younger than you! Hope this helps!

No it is not wierd and it isn't illegal, it just is awkward and tricky these days. The average age difference of men and women marrying is about 3 years and so at some time one of them was 20 and the other 17.
The problem these days is the statutory rape laws and the hyper activity of people who can't separate a 30 year old clod picking on 12 year olds from young people growing up.
Be very careful, be very public, and work on being virtuous for a couple of years.

Your treading on dangerous ground here. If I were you, I would go the long way around and find out how her parents would feel about this. That way, if they don't approve, you won't be fighting an uphill battle and can make your decision before you get in too deep. 20 and 16 is a whole lot different than 24 and 20.

neverdugdisco... is right.. it is illegal.... find someone your own age or older... it's not like you'll be hurt over this .. get over her if you have only known her a few days it wont be bad to just forget about her now.... it's not a big age difference .. it's just not the right time considering that she's a minor and at that age probably pretty stupid.. even people who seem smart dont really know what they want at that age... so I dont think it's a good idea.. im sure there's a pretty 20+ year old out there for you...

i think society should put less strain on the idea about ages differences in relationships... it's true that some age differences can have negative effects such as a 20 yro drug dealer and a goody good 16 together, but there are some 20 yro old people out there who are kool and conciderate and who attracted to a younger opposite sex. If you like her go for it only if your the type whos down to earth, but if you ever go on a relationship maybe just take it to a down low uno.

There is nothing wrong on there if you are interested in the person herself. Having more friends in your age group or younger is fine.

I know there are a lot of concern from others in here on the "legal" matter. It is a right point of view that you need to take note and be responsible to it, but it should not be stopping point affecting you to have more friends.

Have fun..
