A good photographer will make you feel comfortable, so see if your friend is good...whats the worst thing that will happen...the pics won't be great, then again since it is your friend you may get comfortable and take the best pics of your life.

I would suggest doing your first photo session outdoors in a near by park and just walk and talk and be yourself. Outdoors you have a lot of props to use (trees to lean against, flowers to look at, park bench to sit on etc). The photographer should be able to talk to you and when you least expect it he should have shot off a picture. Before you know it he has already photographed you being natural. This also has be a good trait of the photographer to "relax" you.

In a studio with all of those lights and on a plain background newer models get lost and do not know what to do and they can get tense. I would say go to the studio another day after you have seen what he shot while you were outside shooting.

As for taking a "DRINK" that is not the answer. You do not want any alcohol during a photo session. I never let any of my models drink alcohol for a photo shoot.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

The great and strange thing about photography is that is not only captures the person's image it also capture the person's persona. My wife was always uncomfortable in front of cameras. Being married to me she has almost no choice but to have pictures takes all the time.

And as she has more and more pictures taken, she became more and more comfortable. And as she became more comfortable in front of the camera, the pictures started showing that.

Also it helps that she trusts me as a photographer. And as she saw herself in photograph coming out like a model, she started feeling less awkward being in front of the camera.

She feels that she'll never be completely comfortable in front of the camera. But she won't hate or dread being front of it either.

Just think about these statistics: for Sports Illustrated swin suit issue, they take over 10,000 pictures for about 10 to 20 page spread (this was during the film days).

So you may compare yourself to model when you see them in magazines and TV. But you are being unfair to yourself.

I had the same situation too. My friend is a photographer. He says that I look expressive even as I walk and talk and he wanted to take pictures of me. Portrait pictures is his specialty. But the trouble is, I act completely different and unnatural when I know that he's taking pictures. So he asked his wife to help. I'm good friends with her. We were chatting over a cup of tea while he took a bunch of pictures of both of us. Find something other than the camera to concentrate on, like a conversation with a friend. That helps.

Dress the way u want to be pictured. A good photo will have a set and the appropriate scrim (background screen) for portraits. Try historical settings. and with today's technology, a green screen can be a gateway to imagination.
Old school thought and practice has one photo out of 36 that is acceptable to both model and shooter.
Historically, u may be in an enviable place if someone wants to shoot u. I mean that in the photo shoot sense. Mark the date, detail every shot on the back of the print. Shyness is overcome by one beautiful pic.

My advice for you is just to relax and have fun. If you don't feel comfortable in front of the camera just tell your friend to randomly pick up the camera and snap a photo. Make it fun and surprising. Your pictures will turn out great if you relax and don't make a big deal out of it. Good luck!

nikonfotos above gives as good of advice as any I have seen on here.

Remember this, if a photographer, who specializes in taking good shots of other people, sees something in you that is photogenic then trust that hunch and relax. You obviously have something about you that peaks his photographic interest. He is your friend and I trust he will not do a bad job.

After the shoot and after he has had time to download them, you need to sit down with him and give him your thoughts as to why you like one over another. Then, sit back and listen to his opinion as to why he likes one over another. Since he is a friend, you might really get some honest feedback you have been needing in your life. Good luck, relax and just have fun.

Is your freind an experienced professional? If so, leave it all up to them. They will tell you what to do. Most likely to "act natural and don't pay attention to the camera" (for starters).

As far as what to wear.... Leave it all up to the photographer. Again, as long as they are an experienced professional, they will know what looks good and what does/does not work etc...

Could be a great experience to see yourself in a new way.

Just look out for slick come on lines, like, "Lets do something really artistic" along with a request to remove more clothing. Soon you might end up having more than you bargained for.
