I've read where you can cause serious damage when biting a numb lip, but I can't find anything that tells what the damage is. Is severe swelling normal when biting a numb lip?

If it's a minor bite laceration, it should heal by itself in about 2 weeks (though it will sting and hurt like heck). Meanwhile, support your son with OTC analgesics / anti-inflammatories (if he can tolerate them) and regular saline rinses.

If it's a major deep laceration, then your son should get some stitches for it. A dentist can suture the wound closed to make it heal properly.

Good luck.

when there is injury to normal tissues there occurs signs of inflammation which includes swelling.so when the lip is numb and insensitive to pain you will not know the intensity of pain when the lip is bit.so with the amount of bitting the swelling will be correspondingly more than the normal .and the pain will be felt as the action of anaesthesia comes down.

using lukewarm saline water would decrease the swelling.and u can use petroleum jelly if the lip is wounded.

HELLO,
CRUSHED ICE IN A SMALL BAGGIE WILL HELP TO KEEP IT FROM SWELLING TOO MUCH. CHILDREN'S MOTRIN WILL ALSO HELP TO KEEP THE PAIN DOWN.
HE WILL BE ALRIGHT IN A FEW DAYS AND SHOULD BE ALL HEALED IN 2 WEEKS.

put couple of ice cubes in a ziploc bag and tell him to put it against his lip. it should help with the swelling. is his lip bleeding? if so, apply pressure. if anything else occurs to his lip, go to the doctor and let your dentist know out of courtesy what happened.
