The dates on products are sell on dates. It would be kind of silly to have to use all of something like that on the date you bought it. Most preoducts are good for at least a week after the sell on date.

Buttermilk like other dairy products will begin to sour after a little more than a week when opened. I would refrain from drinking it. The (bad) bacteria count is probably very high and may cause intestinal problems.

How can you tell? It's already sour, lol. Seriously, it will be fine. I don't drink reg milk after the expiration date plus 1 day.

Buttermilk sold commercially is a cultured low-fat product, not the byproduct of butter making. Friendship Dairies in upstate New York stamps its buttermilk with a 26-day code. ''We feel there is a comfortable seven days beyond that pull date,'' the dairy said. Cultured dairy products such as buttermilk do have a tendency to separate, but stirring should restore the proper texture.
Another site also suggests, Refrigerate immediately in original container. Keep container closed. It will last 2 weeks. So I guess it depends on type and brand you buy.
Buttermilk will last up to two weeks due to its high acidity level, although it is best the first week. Once opened, it should be used within a week for drinking purposes, but it will be fine for baking often even after the expiration date.
Always look for the latest expiration date on the carton, just as you would for any dairy product. Keep buttermilk refrigerated, and don't let it sit out on the counter or the kitchen table for any length of time.
Like milk, buttermilk can be frozen up to three months, but it is not recommended because it tends to separate. If you freeze it, let it thaw in the refrigerator and be sure to mix it well to reincorporate the solids with the liquid.
Although it will be perfectly safe to drink, you may prefer to use previously-frozen buttermilk in recipes rather than for drinking, as it tends to lose texture and mouth-appeal.
You'll also find buttermilk powder in your grocery store. Basically dehydrated buttermilk, it has an admirable shelf life, almost indefinitely on the shelf unopened and up to a year and even longer after opening when stored in the refrigerator. Buttermilk powder is generally used for baking rather than drinking.

Usually a couple of day after expiration, but it never reaches that time with me. I drink it well before then.
