Typically they monitor things like your pulse and your breathing rate. The real problem involves the skill of the examiner. It is that person who compares your answers while responding to a neutral question to the results while you are responding to a relevant emotionally-charged question. If you stay calm in your pulse for example while they ask you what your name is but your pulse rate goes up rapidly when they ask when you last saw your missing friend that indicates to the examiner that you consider that last question a scary one that brings out guilty feelings.

A lie detector works most of the time.

I have made a simple one which just measures the sweat on someones palm. It may have been 60% accurate. It was basically a very sensitive ohmeter , placed across two coin sized electrodes placed in the palms and secured by some light force, like weights or springs or rubber bands. The user has to sit still. When feeling uncomfortable, the resistance between the palms goes down.

Its a very sensitive dectector..It will detect the BP and pulse rate. The main source is that when we get tensed therewill be change in BP and pulse rate...The lie detector works on this basic principle. It assumes that u are tensed when u tell a lie
But truly speaking there are two possibities..

1.U may get tensed becoz of someother reason.
2.The person who is telling a lie neednt be tensed

along with these..the other disadvantages of lie detector are

1.they are extremely sensitive to noise n u need better sensitivity to pulse signals..
2.the variations are extremly low..
3.U should have very rough surface... etc.,

SO it can be said as a flop..but it can give a better idea for a future technology

"Lie detector" tests are hokum. There is no scientific standard for "truthfullness," thus there is no way to calibrate and verify such a device. Some guy with some electronic gizmos and a "training certificate" is making guesses (perfaps good guesses), and people believe it. Fortunately, courts (so far) have recognized that it's hokum, so it's inadmissable in court.

When you lie your heart rate speeds up, and somehow they can tell when happens.

Changes in pulse, heart rate, breathing. They don't work that well.
