We all know by now that the earth orbits around the sun, therefore it is not a stationary object, but in the bible it is mentioned otherwise. In many verses in the bible, the earth is mention as a stationary object that doesn't move. If you have read the bible you will know, and it's pretty clear. If the bible is the truth, then why does it contradict with obvious facts?? As a personal opinion, the author of the bible wasn't aware of the fact that the earth was a moving object at the time he wrote it ( if you have no knowledge about the solar system you would have no way of telling that the earth was a moving object, and obviously the author had no clue, the only one that had a clue, Galileo, got in to deed **** for revealing the truth, poor guy). And what about "the four corners of the earth", which is also mentioned in the bible?? Ligitimate answers please.

Because at the time the Bible was written, that is what people accepted as fact. God didn't write the Bible; people did.

The Bible innaccurately says the Earth is stationary because the people who wrote it did not know that it moves around the Sun, and humans have always been very anthropocentric. We humans are the most important and precious things in the universe, so it must all center around us (they thought). It is the same reason they believed that *our* world, and we humans had to have been created instantly by God. How else could it have happened?

But Galileo discovered through his telescope that the earth was not immobile and central to the universe, as the Bible said it was. So the Church silenced him (and many others who knew the truth, who knew that the Bible was not entirely accurate). Darwin (and others) discovered that humans have not always existed as modern, intelligent homosapiens as the Bible said they had. So the Church attempted to silence him too, and is still doing so.

Who knows how many great scientific discoveries have been supressed by the Church, how much farther and faster science and medicine might have developed, and how much misery would have been prevented and how many lives might have been saved, had the Church not been so consistently repressive toward scientific thought and reason, as it still is today? That is why we must not let Christian fundamentalists (or those of any other religion) replace the study of true science in our schools with the study of their creation myths.

The word "stationary" does not appear in the Bible. You don't say where in scripture that you found this glaring error. Job 38 describes an earth that is dynamic in every way, being influenced by Plaeides, and talking about Orion's belt being loosed. Isaiah describes the earth as an orb.

The scribes of the Bible knew what they were talking about.

Most often, alleged discrepancies and errors in the Bible are easily dismissed through contextual understanding, or chalking it up to a misplaced jot or tittle in the original language.

What proof do we have that the Earth is NOT stationary. I think Science will prove that the Earth is the center of the universe eventually. We are even finding that Einstein s Theory of relativity is not completely accurate. Cosmologists are baffled these days at abnormalities they are finding in the cosmos. It s an exciting time to be alive in the world of science! Geocentrism is being revisited. We are learning that all of the research done around geocentrism has been squelched---NOT because we have no proof, but because it means the textbooks would have to be rewritten and the assumptions we have made in the past would have to be revisited.

We do not have any physical pictures or time lapse video of the Earth rotating around the sun-contrary to popular belief. All we have are "illustrations" of what scientists BELIEVE is happening.

Open your mind-why is it that you absolutely reject the thought that perhaps it is the Sun that rotates us. Since time began-there has been sun worship and Sun God worship. Isn t it possible that all of this is what influenced us to believing that WE rotate the sun?

I am just waiting for science to catch up to God. :)

Scientists think they are trying to prove that God does not exist, but with every new discovery, they are proving more that he does. :)

The Hebrew word for "moved" does not always refer to physical movement in the Bible. For example David says it of himself: "I have set the LORD always before me: because [he is] at my right hand, I shall not be moved." (Psa 16:8) Obviously David is not saying that he must forever remain physically stationary, but rather that he shall abide. So too can the earth be understood.
