shouldn't cost anything to file. however, if they ever "catch up" to you they'll force you to "prove" that you don't owe them anything. Especially if they see that you made x amount in that year, while they only received x amount. If you only lived in the state for part of the year, it will be easier to prove.

Yes, you do have to file to get the money you are owed, and some state do require that you file a return. But all you'll just lose out on is the $50, and from what you already said, it's not worth it to you to file for it. Check your state guidelines though and make sure there's no penalty for not filing.

You indicated that the state owed you $50 (a tax refund) but that $50 wasn't worth filing a return. Download the form from the Internet (free), complete the form and mail it ($0.41). Get a $50 refund for a $0.41 investment.

You are not required to file a California tax return if your income was below a certain level such that you don't owe any taxes. However it is in your best financial interest to file and get the refund for taxes that were withheld.

You have to file if your income exceeds the state's filing requirement amount. The fact that they owe you money and you don't feel that it's worth the effort to prepare the return is irrelevant. At least one state, Ohio, assesses a $500 penalty for late filing/failure to file even if you are due a refund.

Yes, but there is a time frame involved. It's something like 3 or 5 years you have to file the return. But it is illegal to not file, no matter if it's even 7$. However, in my state, if you made below 500$ for the entire year, you don't have to file anything.

Nope, in fact some revenue departments will file for you after a certain number of years. Be careful though, if you do in fact owe them money, that 50 dollars that you thought you were owed could balloon big time.

Each state sets its own limits for having to file, so if your income was higher than the limit for that state, then yes you have to. State limits are often different from federal limits. In PA for example, if you had over $33 income for the year you have to file, although you might not owe any tax.

If you don't file, you won't get your refund.
