To me Bhakti stands for spiritual devotion to all around us – our brethren, all living beings, the Nature and all the creations we attribute to our creator. Bhakti also means a spiritual devotion to the God you worship by conducting your life that is purposeful to you and useful to all around you.

But the Bakti we see around everywhere is fooling our creator with text book recitation of prayers and praises and prEying on unwary objects – living and nonliving things – for mean selfish purposes. lileeann33

Bhakti is love towards other. Love does not mean sexual. If you love your parents brothers, sisters, Friends, also enemies, animals, birds, flowers, trees your bhakti increases and you get equal response from them. Please see old movie "Do ankhe Bara Haat" "Guide" love changed hard minds. Bhukti is not simply praying to god, your movements around any creature tells weather you have bhakti in them or not. Lord Gautam Budha was staying in forest and no animal was fighting or killing other in several kilo meters of area around him, this was the height of bhakti. Today we prey Lord Gautam Buddha and eat non vegetarian food then how we can understand bhakti.

kanairam's answer is once again correct.

To add that, bhakti should be pure according to this verse:

The distinction between a pure devotee and a karma-miśra devotee is this: a pure devotee does not desire anything for material enjoyment, whereas a mixed devotee becomes a devotee to become a first-class enjoyer of this material world. One who is in direct touch with the Supreme Personality of Godhead in devotional service remains pure, uncontaminated by material desires (anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaḿ jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam [Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 1.1.11]).

anyabhilashita-sunyam, jnana-karmady-anavritam
anukulyena krishnanu-silanam bhaktir uttama

"One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Krishna favorably and without desire for material profit or gain through karmic activities or philosophical speculation (jnana). That is called pure devotional service (ananya-bhakti)."

Bhakti (Devanāgarī: भक्ति) is a word of Sanskrit origin meaning devotion and also the path of devotion itself, as in Bhakti-Yoga. Within Hinduism the word is used exclusively to denote devotion to a particular deity or form of God. Within Vaishnavism bhakti is only used in conjunction with Vishnu or one of his associated incarnations, it is likewise used towards Shiva by followers of Shaivism.

Bhakti as a process of yoga is described in detail famously within the Bhagavad Gita, wherein it is given as the ultimate form of religious expression, for which all other dharmas should be abandoned.

[Cc. Madhya 19.170]

"Bhakti, or devotional service, means engaging all our senses in the service of the Lord, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of all the senses. When the spirit soul renders service unto the Supreme, there are two side effects. One is freed from all material designations, and, simply by being employed in the service of the Lord, one's senses are purified."
