Bring what you wear to travel, but be prepared to buy all new underwear, towels, etc. in the standardized type preferred by your service.
You will send your civilian clothes home after you are issued uniforms, probably underwear (but you'll want to buy more in all likelihood) and other items.
Talk to your recruiter. Recruiter should be able to pretty much tell you how to prepare for basic training or boot camp.

Your recruiter should provide you with a packing list ... also, you will most likely spend a few days inprocessing before you hit bootcamp, so you will need a few sets of civilian clothes before you are issued your military clothing... if you get any kind of packing list, bring EVERYTHING IT SAYS ... follow that stuff to the letter

Are you male or female? I'll assume male, because I can help you that way, and I'll also assume you're talking about the army.
You'll have to wear brown jockeys at basic. That's it. If you have access to them at this point, buy some. Otherwise, take enough for three days. You'll go through the PX and clothing issue soon after getting there. Buy some at the PX when you go. You'll only get 7 pair at issue. If you don't have more than that, plan on wearing dirty some days.

Bring Extra ~just in case.
*In case you have to wait longer than you were told by your Recruiter.
*In case your flight plans aren't etched in stone by God Himself.
*In case the Military exercises its right to change its mind.
*Wear Chonies that you don't mind displaying while standing in line for what seems like an eternity.

Hurry up and Wait is NOT a line in a movie.
(and don't bring Skittles! You'll just have to trust me on that one.)

Not sure about all the branches. but for Marine boot camp all you need is the clothes on your back, because you are not going to keep anything that you bring
