you can unplug it for a while, but its not really a good idea to,because the exhaust emissions will be a lot higher on it,if you want to you can get a good used one from a junk yard, but they come with no guarantee at all ,it may last a day, a month, or forever,i have bought a lot of used ones and had good luck with them,as for a new one their well over 200 bucks for that car, good luck hope this helps.

I have to assume that the air fliter is clean since you were monkeying around in there. If not replace this first.

You can get the Haynes manual that is called "Computer Codes and Engine Management Systems". They have simple tests you can run on every electrical component (with a volt/ohms meter to make sure it is dead or dying or good..

It does change the fuel/air mix when it's unplugged.

An easy thing to do first is pull one of the battery cables off motor not running) for a minute and then reattach it and then when your are driving next see if the code or light comes back on. If not, it was a fluke or hiccup.

Good Luck!

You can go to the junkyard for that part but no garuantee it will work properly, but for the low price its a good thing to try instead of the new price off $200... Its not real bad to drive with it unplugged, it will only lower gas milage and higher emissions... a new or used air flow sensor will do the trick.

Try to clean the sensor with electrical cleaner spray can, then blow clean with compressed air, sometimes a piece of debris stuck on the sensing tip itself causing problem.
