i'm male, 24, with good fitness, i've been going to the gym for years and have run a marathon. but i can't do a simple cartwheel, or a handstand and i'd really like to be able to!! it amazes me when i see kids cartwheeling effortlessly on the beach, and yet i've tried several times through the years and just can't get the hang of it. do you think if i just keep practising consistently i will get it? and even be able to progress onto back handsprings? any advice on how i should practice? i'm pretty sure it's not my arm strength, i can do 12 pull ups in a row. i weigh about 170lbs. thanks!!

As a former gymnast, I can safely say, that with practice, you will surely be able to do a cartwheel. I can assure you, it is not a lack of strength. You need to learn to actively control your center of gravity. Once you master that, A cartwheel will be easy.
Also, chances are, you are cartwheeling on your side. This is an incorrect form. Find someone who has been in gymnastics or something similar who can demonstrate the correct form.
Finally. You must be patient. I am currently teaching two of my friends to so cartwheels. We have worked for more than three hours, and they still can't land on their feet. So patient will be absolutly key to learning.

I'm pretty young and I can't do cartwheels or handstands because I fear that I will fall down and split my head open. But on a happier note, once you get rid of that fear and you have a solid knowledge of doing cartwheels, you can do it. For cartwheels: Stand with your back straight! And I mean straight or else you'll mess up. And Put your arms straight up in the hair with your palms facing the ceiling. Now, with a lot of power, kick your left leg up, place your right hand on the floor, (quickly) followed by the left, and land on your left foot, then right foot. Think: Hand Hand, Foot Foot. I prefer trying this on a mat first.
For Handstand directions, here's a great site below (perfect for you) I found. Hope it helps!

Get the handstand first. Make sure you are not throwing your head back in the handstand and cartwheel because you'll arch the whole thing and it looks terrible. A real handstand is a straight line from tips of toes to hands.
Cartwheels come after doing them thousands of times. Really. It's just practice. :^)
For the back handspring, get a tumbling instructor. You can put your back and neck at risk trying to learn them on your own. But there are drills you can do to get started learning them, in the meantime. http://geocities.com/aescougarcheer/basics.htm#st

I'm healthy also and I have never been able to touch my feet with my knees straight. They say practice makes perfect but maybe a cartwheel isn't what your body wants to do.
Why do you need to do cartwheels anyway??

Hey, cartwheels actually ARE tough. I'm sure if you keep practicing, you'll be able to do it! kids are kids. when I was little, I used to be able to do all sorts of things, but now that range of motion is quite limited. haha. But just keep trying, and you'll get there =)

Why worry? You sound as if you are quite fit so really does it matter that you are unable to do a cartwheel?
