Ive heard this question a lot...and here is what I believe.
God does not have a gender. He is not male nor female.
I think that as humans we are un able to comprehend what God really is.
When the bible was written, referring to someone as He or Him was a sign of respect, so I think thats where that came from.
I could be totally wrong. Thats just my opinion.

God is not male or female. God is a pure Spirit, and spirits do not have gender. Why would they? They don't reproduce, and that is the purpose of gender. However, God has chosen to reveal Himself to us in the image of "Father". Since we have no pronouns to refer to persons who are neither male nor female, the logical pronouns to use in referring to a Father image are male pronouns.

God is a supernatural being whom we assume resembles a human because the Bible says we were made in his likeness. As far as gender, God (at least the God whom the Christians believe in) is male. Throughout the Old testament, the pronouns He and Him are used. In the New Testament, God is referred to as the Father.

God is always being given male traits throughout the Bible, such as the "Father".
For example:
"Our FATHER in the heavens, let your name be sanctified" -Matthew 6:9
"just as the FATHER taught me I speak these things. And HE that sent me is with me; HE did not abandon me to myself, because I always do the things pleasing to HIM." -John 8:28, 29
That being said, it should be noted that God has no physical body. He does not have the physical body members that would distinguish a male person. "God is a Spirit", says the Bible (John 4:24) and is invisible (Hebrews 11:26). The Bible refers to God as being male because He created man first and has given authority of headship to man over woman:
"the head of a woman is the man" -1 Corinthians 11:3
Hence, the Bibles refering to God as male helps us to recognize his ultimate rulership over us. Being referred to as female would be a contradicting term.

God is non-corporeal so it doesn't really make sense to think of God as male or female.
God is more than male or female - the bible says he created males and females in his image - so the characteristics of both sexes reflect something of the character of God.

Because in the book of Genisis, the Bible states that God created Adam in his own image, so therefore God is a male. In addition. there are many biblical references to God as He in the Bible.

We Muslims use the word Allah as opposed to God because it does not imply any gender. God is unlike any created being and has no gender.

For goodness sake, to hold the life force (aka god, love, truth, paradox) in such a narrow, physical form as GENDER... is rediculouse. If anyone describes their god, that little character that haunts them, surly their description would be traced to some pchycological, self image.
