find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
and take a multivitamin with breakfast and omega or flax oil capsules.

Alrighty time for some serious answers.

There are several keys to losing weight and more of it is based on the kitchen rather than the gym. You want to start off by forming all the snacks and meals you eat throughout the day into 6 small meals. Each containing lean protein, healthy fat, and carbs. In terms of carbs you want to eat whole grain as they take longer to digest and make you feel fuller longer. Lean protein is like chicken, turkey, fish, but there are also fatty fish like salmon which is still good for you.

Her are some snack ideals, all bran crackers, plain yogurt sweetened with honey and fruits.

Let me reiterate, YOU NEED CARBS, just the right kinds from whole grain. The no carb diets are very unhealthy for you, they promote a unhealthy immune system and all you lose is water weight which will come back immediately once you eat carbs again. Carbs are you energy source throughout the day and you need them to fuel your exercises.

Stay away from eating too much red meat, pork, beef, etc. Do 40-60 minutes of cardio per day, also lift some weights, the more lean body mass you build aka muscle the more fat you burn.

how much do you want to lose.... if you only want to lose 5 lbs i know how you can in 5 days... or even less... i lost 45 lbs doing this diet..n some ppl say its not healthy but neither is being 45 lbs overweight..and its not permanent..so what the heck..
all you do is eat a chicken caesar salad for lunch at noon. and thats all you eat all day. you will lose 1 1/2 -2 lbs a day doing that. so if you want weight off quick thats the way to go.. if you got really hungry at dinner you could eat a couple pieces of turkey and cheese

Well, you should do what you can do. If you can run a couple miles a week then do it. I do not want to give you a set number of hours because I do not know how physcially active you are right now and I dont want you do over do it. I would also do pushups, situps, swimming, and just being active. Stay away from foods with a lot of cholestoral. Eat well balanced meals and do not eat until you are stuffed. Eat until you are full but not stuffed. Eat fruits and vegetables.

To successfully lose weight, you must carry out
a plan to balance your caloric intake with exercise.
Ideally, dieting should be done by eating a nutritionally
balanced, low-calorie diet and increasing physical activity.
