I have always wanted to try black bear hunting up at my camp, and my primary hunting rifle is a Savage 30-06. I was wondering about the performance of this rifle on the bear, and if I should use something bigger. Thanks.

I have seen many black bear taken with a 30-06 180 grain bullet. As a matter of fact that's all I ever use on my property in northern Ontario - for deer, bear and moose. As long as your shot placement is good you'll have no problem!

A 30-06 is quite capable of killing even a grizzly bear, as a matter of fact probably all big game animals in the world have been hunted sucessfully with a 30-06.

The 30-06 is the ideal choice for all North American Game*...When you hunt with a 30-06 you don't need any other rifle*... Bear are not plentiful where I live in Pa. so I do not hunt them*... When they do become plentiful I will*...

The 30-06 has and will continue to reliably kill black bear out to 200yds.

Just use a heavier; say 180+ grains bullet than you would for deer.

The '06 will take most game in North America,
you shouldn't look to replace it unless you are hunting grizzlies, polar bear, or arctic musk-ox.

Although you could probably take musk-ox if you're not in brown bear territory.

Your 30-06 is more than adequate for the Black Bear.

If you read my story on bears you will not believe it but I prefer to hunt with a bow I still carry a 44 auto loader to back me up I might be crazy but I'm not stupid. the 30-6 will do the job just fine but learn the judge the size and practice a lot until you can hit a poker chip at 200 yards aim small miss small. you want to place the shot so as not to cause the animal that is capable of ripping your head off any more pain than is necessary. and use as much of the meat as you can.don't shoot for sport only unless it's a problem Bear. luck 308 weatherbe will knock him on his a&&

Dont waste your time going to something bigger. The 06 will work fine just do as the earlier guy said and get 180 plus grains. Best of luck.
