Done right, the CA18 can make that power. The parts tend to be a bit cheaper but maybe not as easy to find. The SR20 will probably make the power a bit easier but it will probably cost more overall. Part of what you'll be paying for is the lower mileage on the SR.

All this being said, don't expect this to be a 'cheap' project.

You are definitely on the right track. Both engines are very good choices.
I would probably go with the SR20DET because the SR, just like the out-going CA, is both turbocharged and inter cooled which is good. The SR actually replaced the CA because the CA18 was deemed too expensive to produce and no longer met Japanese emission standards, so it was replaced by the SR20.

The SR20DET is easier to work with in my opinion and is becoming more commonplace due to the forced induction aftermarket additions available for the SR20DET. It also produces more horsepower stock. The CA18 however has Garrett T25 Turbo which is a little bigger than that in the SR and the engine also revs a little above 8,000rpms.

Which ever one you pick is a good choice. My final opinon is go with the SR20DET.

the CA18 is a good torquey engine and would be a neat starting point due to lower cost [less desireable] and its relative rareness. But if saving money is your main concern, stick with the KA24. It's a light truck engine originally and with 2.4 litres [that's 30% more displacement than a CA18] it's going to pull better with less investment. The SR20 is far and away the best option, but you're going to be paying for the quality.

On a personal note, the "and want to do it with as little money as possible" part is bad juju. Not being rich, i know the feeling... but always plan big and take your time. Shortcuts for the sake of saving money will kill your porject faster than trying to work on it drunk =P

find a wrecked firebird with a LS-1 V-8 engine and transmission. There you go 360 hp and the gear box to handle it. Weight is only about 100 pounds more than the KA-24 engine and gear box. Three times the horsepower easy as headers and cam.

sr20det all the way .. you can use your same tranny. which make it very easy to install also the sr20det is the factory engine for (Silva's jap 240sx) Ive done a swap in a 91 240 and it turned out very nice ...to get 300hp will require stand alone engine management and injectors and a better turbo/inter cooler..you should also source a LSD from a Silva or infiniti j30 which are easier to find... a open diff will just spin one tire

ok, so right here is the interior track. An SR20DET in authentic style makes 245hp and that i think of 230ft-lb torque. An RB25DET makes i think of 215hp and 250ft-lb An RB26DETT makes approximately 300hp and 325ft-lb. A 2JZ-GTTE makes approximately 320hp and 325ft-lb additionally... An SR20DET dressed, with trans, weighs approximately 480lbs. The inventory KA24DE with trans, weighs approximately 600lbs. A inventory RB25/RB26 with trans weighs approximately seven hundred-750lbs. A inventory 2JZ with trans weighs over 700lbs. Now, to throw a monkeywrench into your plans (or 2) A Ford 4.6L DOHC Aluminum V8 and 5 velocity are 490lbs, and make as much as 320hp and 305ft-lb A GM LS1 V8 and 6 velocity are 510lbs, and make as much as 350hp and 345ft-lb. An LS2 is approximately 525lbs and makes 400hp and 380ft-lb. Your terrific skill to weight ratio is going to be to apply a GM LS V8. it is likewise extra unique than an RB or 2JZ, yet once you're conversing a pair of 200+lb weight distinction, noticeably over the front.
