My husband is a plumber by trade.
I will tell you what he says...
As a general rule, NOTHING should be flushed into a toilet that is not as dissolvable as toilet paper!!
But the nails cut from fingers are so tiny, it should not cause any problems, unless you have a clog later, from something else, that would contribute to it, but not cause it.

As has been said for those reasons and this... They are to be kept, buried.. OR BURNED. That's it.
Never ever dispose of them as so many are now a days.
You can also EAT them :) no joke really they are packed full of nutrients... though I wouldn't recommend that last one ... :S Yuck.
I personally suggest putting back from once they came... the EARTH of course xD yay!.... mmhmm
The trash.. heh yeah right were a witch like snatches them UP! I THINK NOT :P

They do breakdown, so they aren't really a threat.
I assume your property has it's own septic system and that is what concerns your wife...having problems with it in the future.
If not, I woudn't worry at all about a city system.
Either way, the amount a fingernails would have to be staggeringly bizarre to create a problem.
But, to appease your wife, just toss them out in the trash----you do burn your trash though right? I'd hate to clog up the trash dump with piles of discarded fingernails.
Best to just find out what she wants you to do with them.
And, be grateful if this is your biggest issue in your marriage.

Why the F not? Just type some stuff up yourself using your word program or something and then copy and paste the logo of a university making it look like a legitimate study. Then print it and rub it in her face. VICTORY!! Ive been doing it for about 10 years living in the same home. Bigger stuff has gone down there without a problem.

It would take a LOT of finger nails to cause an effect on the toliet. I don't think you and your familey have anything to worry about. I would think you would have to save ALL your clippings for about 10 years and then flush them all at once to have an effect.

You should not dispose of general waste via the toilet. Just collect them in old newspaper and throw them into the bin.
