The term comes, originally from the latin "jocale" meaning plaything.

While many jewelry store have been run by jewish people - it was one of the few acceptable careers for them historically, during the earlier times when they were first forced to live in 'ghettos"(thent he term meant specific area of the city, not a slum like today) - the term is NOT named for them.

Your boss is passing on false information. And possibly racist toned info.

Jewelry is a latin derived word jocale(plaything) which by way of old France became jouel and later in old English to jewellery. I feel that your manager is such a rude and unknowledgable person. Here this should give you a little more knowledge and insite concerning the subject.

It's the other way around....and it's not exactly jewelry. It's precious metals and stones. But not all Jews have those names. A lot of them have Germanic names too.

Etymology: Middle English juel, from Anglo-French, diminutive of ju, jeu game, play, from Latin jocus game, joke

Others have already looked it up for you. The Idea that it is from the same place as the word Jew or that they are related is just wrong though.
But it does almost sound sensible doesn't it. I guess diamonds should be called Amsterdams.

But it is true Jews used to be in the jewelry business, not racist, but fact. It's how they built up their community, no shame in that...

If jewelry is named for Jews, then so are Jujubes and Ju Jitsu.

NO word jewellery is derived from the word jewel, which was anglicised from the Old French "jouel" in around the 13th century.[citation needed] Further tracing leads back to the Latin word "jocale", meaning plaything.
