Just talking to yourself does not constitute having a diagnosis of DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) or what was formally known as MPD. Having DID is not something that someone just "wants" to have. It is found in patients who have experienced EXTREME trauma and who probably would not have survived had their minds not split off to form these other "personalities", "alters", "parts", "insiders", etc. Not to say that this is your situation but more often than not a person with DID will be misdiagnosed for years before finally getting the proper diagnosis. It has to be determined whether or not the voices are actually coming from inside your head (case of DID) or outside of your head (example of Schizophrenia). Also, even though more Professionals are recognizing this illness there are still sadly, many who do not or should I say will not write it down. There are numerous specialist in this area though that if you are serious and feel you need a second opinion then that would be your first step. Find someone who specializes in the treatment of DID. Good luck to you and I hope things get better for you~

To: Bin there dun that ~ This DOES exist! Do you have a medical degree or are you a Psychologist or Psychiatrist? Just very curious. I have been living with this for many, many years. It is very different than a "personality" disorder such as BPD. I have met numerous others who struggle to live on a daily basis with this disorder and if you could just acknowledge that WE are survivors!!! Your words are very hurtful to many.......Thank you!

I'm bipolar and talk to myself. I've been "talking" to myself out loud since I was a kid because it's how I think the best. While schizophrenia and bipolar disorder share quite a few commonalities, they do not mean a person has Dissociative Identity Disorder. (DID aka multiple personality disorder) Read the link I posted below. You might find it helpful.

Take good care.

I too am a bipolar schizophrenic and I don't have multiple personalities. There were times when I was younger that I had signs, but they went away with age. But as they went away my friends started to appear. I guess it is case by case. I feel like I do, but my doctor says that it is just part of being what I am

The queston is do you have multiple personalities? people who have multiple personalities generaly dont know that they have them because when they switch between them they dont relise that they havent been in controll. If you often times are told by people that you said something that you dont remember and find things that you wrote or drew that you dont remember and are possibly in a different handwriting than it is possible that you do it just hasnt been diognosed. on the other hand just because your bi-polar schizophrenic does not automaticly mean that you have a m.p.d. Its possible that you do but it does not mean that you have to.

I'm not sure that you want multiple-personalities, sounds like you have enough to keep you busy for a while.

I talk to myself out loud too, all the time, I do it when I'm happy, kind of like when someone hums to themselves.

Good luck!

Because MPD is an extremely rare form of mental illness.

I think you have enough problems to deal with other than having 'different people' in your body to deal with all of life's situations.

I have only met one true MPD and she had the most horrific childhood as most MPD do. That is usually why other personalities apear. To deal with mum or dad or who ever is harming them.

good for you.(((is this frank from B&N? stop trying to make excuses to not work and collect disability.)))
multi personalities dont talk to each other or even know the others exist. schizophrenics may not know they have a problem. we all talk to ourselves out loud constantly.

you need a really traumatizing experience to divide your psyche in two or more pieces, you should have so much trouble finding one. We believe in you c'mon! :-)
