It depends on how long it has been and how old the system is. If the system is in good working order and you aren't experiencing any backups or anything going on outside with the cleanouts or water surfacing on the ground, then it would be safe to follow this chart (if you don't know the size of your tank, standard is 1200 gallons):
Household Size (number of people)
"Tank Size
(Gallons)" 1 2 3 4 5 6
500 3 years 1-1/2 years 7 months 5 months 3 months 1 month
1000 6 years 3 years 2 years 1-1/2 years 1 year 7 months
1250 8 years 4 years 2-1/2 years 2 years 1-1/2 years 1 year
1500 10 years 5 years 3 years 2 years 1-3/4 years 2-1/2 years
2000 13 years 6 years 4 years 3 years 2-1/4 years 2 years
2500 16 years 8 years 5 years 3-3/4 years 3 years 2-1/2 years
