All plants and animals on earth serve a purpose. They are either food or medicine for someone. Cannibas (marijuana) was initially used to produce rope fibers (hemp) It was not until man found out that even the original plant had some properties that when ingested cause a slight euphoria that it became a drug. Since those early days, the plants have been mutated through hybridization to the point where the drug action is much stronger than it was in the original.

Considering that to some degree public opinion is against it (it is being put on ballots and it loses, although its by a narrow margin) its not due to "It would crush the Timber, cotton, and Pharmaceutical industry" it due to public fear about legalizing it. Most ppl dont really care about that part of it(the industries that will supposedly be harmed). If it were somehow never put on the ballot (CA and NV for example) then I might agree with you. I agree there is no good logical reason that it is still illegal, but its not the government conspiracy theory that a lot of potheads suscribe to. IT does seem that public opinion is changing and hopefully in time we can stop wasting money on law enforcement for this non issue.
