I recently ended my engagement because we drifted apart. We had a five year long distance relationship but in the last six months he became too addicted with work and stopped caring about our future.

I am going to take my time.... but how long should I wait to start dating again? what would be appropriate?

You are not a widow. There is no "proper" waiting period after a broken engagement. Whenever you feel like it, go for it. You don't have to be ready for another engagement, just get out there. No guy is going to come knocking at your door if you stay home. Our daughter broke 2 engagements. I told her that was OK. Engagements are for taking a good long look at your relationship before you commit to each other for the rest of your lives. Better to break an engagement than a marriage. BTW, the guy she finally married is a really great guy, loving husband, and devoted father. He was worth waiting for, and hunting for.

Half of the time you were together. So, I'd say anywhere from 2 to 2 1/2 years.
