my husband broke the lid to our crockpot so i was wondering if i could just cover the top with foil if i decide to use it before i find a new one. has anyone done this? or see any reason why it might not be a good idea?

I used a layer of foil and a plate to fit snugly in the groove. Just remember not to overfill crock pot and use oven gloves to remove. Came out just aswell.

Unfortunately, no! the point of a crock pot is the slow cooking to keep all of the moisture in the dish. When using a crock pot, you are not even supposed to open the pot once it has started cooking. Foil or plates will let air in which will dry out the food. If a skillet lid fits tightly, that would be fine. my advice is to watch the weekly sales ads. They often feature brand new crockpots for under $20.

Foil may let the water that condenses on the lid run outside and not seal well enough to keep the contents from drying out. Try putting a dinner plate on it.
