"The House Immigration Reform Caucus, chaired by Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.), has seen a steady increase in membership since the Senate legislation was introduced with White House backing. Fifteen members have since joined the group, bringing its membership to a total of 108 members. The caucus fiercely opposes the Senate bill, which in principle would allow the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country to become legal citizens.

The growing membership in the caucus on both sides of the aisle could suggest major problems for any House immigration bill that includes the amnesty provision. Polling results from a recent Democratic survey also underscore that trend.

According to a Democracy Corps poll of 1,600 likely voters in swing districts, conducted June 10-14, 47 % oppose the Senate bill. Only 29 % of respondents favored it"

What do you think this means for the Senate Bill if it makes it to the House?

wanda, the bill is S1639 and it is on Thomas.gov Go in through section 1 and scroll down. For some reason I couldn't get it unless I did that.

They aren't voting on the bill itself yet, but plan to as quickly as they can. It will be up first thing in the morning after morning Senate gobbledegook.

Angela, I agree. I hate this bill though, and I will take any allies I can to kill it (as long as I don't have to spend time with them afterwards.) It has some truly amazing shortcuts for procedure for denial/revocation of visas for immigrants, by the way. I can see why the left likes it as little as I do. You should read it.

This is the strangest phenomenon I have seen in in Washington a long time...This bill and this issue has really partnered strange bed fellows! I guess people are fired up on the anti side and making a plea to all their congress people to kill the bill....We will just have to wait and see, never underestimate this President!

I am praying that Congress will pass the bill, though it does look more unlikely every day. It will take a great balance and compromise between the 2 parties, and who knows which other politicians will switch from their position before the bill comes to a vote. Also many Democrats are looking at this bill with eyes towards the '08 elections, it would not be so bad for them if this bill failed and then they could use it as an election issue ("Bush and the Republicans failed to solve this problem but we can") and also it would increase their support among the Hispanic voting block if they waited until they came to power to push the legislation through. And, it would be great for Conservative Republicans if the bill failed, they can go back to their districts proclaiming victory. So it will take a centrist coalition and a lot of pressure from President Bush to push it through, and right now he is a pretty weak President.

As to the poll that you cited by Democracy Corps, I think a lot of it has to do with how they worded the question. If it's the same that Democracy Corps asked in April, then the question is just talking about the "reward" aspects of the bill. If the question emphacizes the punitive measures in the bill, more people will favor it than oppose. If the question addresses in a balanced way the punitive and reward aspects, people are pretty evenly split 50-50.

So wait, those who oppose the bill will in principle make 12Mil. Illegals legal? I thought it was the other way around.

Either way as to why the senate would allow this Amnesty Bill to go to the House, or even consider this so called "bill" I do not know. I watched on TV the whole thing, the senators are all so far as to what i've heard are against the amnesty bill. I sure hope that the Majority votes NO on the amnesty bill.

If it does make it into the House, well I hope there are some people there that are on a hell's rampage over amnesty and vote NO.

Why would you want to make illegals legal?! That is the dumbest thing i've ever heard! They come here illegally, and we go nice on them and we (nationaly)pay $12,000,000,000 on their school tutions, and you want to make allow them amnesty, as well as money from our taxes?! Yea, thats real smart, give them more money why dont ya! You gotta be kidding me? What country am I in anymore? They need to set up an experation date or something, like 2-3 months to leave the country or we force them all out. New Mexico is no longer just a state, it's becoming the entire country!

Oh yeah. If the battle in the Senate is lost, I've got dead aim at the House. It appears that this Senate Bill will face the Ginsu Bill-O-Matice the one last year did. They'll slice it, dice it, and then puree it to a point where no one will vote for it. We haven't lost in the Senate yet. This is still too close to call, so keep the pressure up. Btw, thanks for all your work on this issue.

Edit: Wanda, As I understand it they will begin voting on 24 amendments to the Bill tomorrow, and then vote on cloture when that is done.

AngelaR: I'm getting on the upward side of middle age, and I have to agree. I've never seen anything like this. Whether Pro or Anti, this one is making for VERY strange political bedfellows. It's like watching a soap opera.
We'll see how it goes.

Basically, this means that even if the Senate is able to push this bill through, the House will squash it, unless the amnesty parts are removed (which is, in my opinion, basically the whole fricking thing). It's always possible that the House will change it to something they like, and then send it back to the Senate for approval. We need to continue watching this like a hawk. It's not unlike Congress to put something on the back burner until the fury is gone and then push it through hidden in the text of something completely unrelated.

My first hope is that it does not make it pass the Senate, but if that fails, the House is where the rubber meets the road. W is hell bended on amnesty so we will have to hope that that those that oppose amnesty sticks to their guns, and are not brought off with promises that we will not find out about till it is too late

When the "Bill is in the House", there will not be a standing ovation. It will die a sudden death. If it gets there.
