Younger than 23, hmmm, at first i thought of James Gavin, but he was in his 30s.

Everyone who made general did so at a younger age than Custer.

Custer's highest actual rank was Lieutenant Colonel. He was a Brevet General during the Civil War, meaning he wore the General's rank, but he was not a General.

After the Civil War, he was reduced to Captain, and while he was offered the rank of full Colonel to lead the 10th Cavalry, he turned that down in favor of the rank of Lt. Colonel commanding the 7th Cavalry.

i dont think custer was a general just during the civil war then he was a colonel.
