I know about going to the dentist. But what about anxiety that seems to arise for no reason, or in the presence of certain people?

What Causes Anxiety Disorders
to Develop?
New technologies are enabling researchers and scientists to learn more about the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence the development of an anxiety disorder. With a better understanding of underlying causes, better treatment and even prevention measures will be possible.

The following are all believed to play a role in the occurrence of anxiety disorders:

heredity
brain chemistry
personality
life experiences
Heredity and anxiety disorders:
There is clear evidence that anxiety disorders run in families. Studies show that if one identical twin has an anxiety disorder, the second twin is more likely to have an anxiety disorder than non-identical (fraternal) twins. These findings suggest that a genetic factor, possibly activated in combination with life experiences, predisposes some people to these disorders.

Brain chemistry and anxiety disorders:
Because symptoms of anxiety disorders are often relieved by medications that alter levels of chemicals in the brain, scientists believe that brain chemistry appears to play a role in the onset of anxiety disorders.

Personality and anxiety disorders:
Researchers believe that personality may play a role in the development of an anxiety disorder, noting that people who have low self-esteem and poor coping skills may be more prone. Conversely, an anxiety disorder that begins in childhood may itself contribute to the development of low self-esteem.

Life experiences and anxiety disorders:

Researchers believe that the relationship between anxiety disorders and long-term exposure to abuse, violence, or poverty is an important area for further study, as life experiences may affect an individual's susceptibility to these disorders.

Sometimes anxiety may be caused by using street drugs like amphetamines, LSD or Ecstasy. Even the caffeine in coffee can be enough to make some of us feel uncomfortably anxious!

There is one kind of anxiety that can be prevented. Anxiety related to food. If you watch what you eat before you go to bed, you will not be ambushed at 2:45 A.M. by waking up feeling nuts. I don't know how many times I have had that happen... but now I watch carefully what I have before bedtime, and sure enough, I sleep like a baby and wake up unafraid and centered.
Another simple thing which helps with all kinds of anxiety is to make a list of the things which really helped you get through it the last time and keep it in your bureau drawer so you will have some ammunition the next time the crazies come to try to upset you. Anxiety can sometimes just be the feeling that you have lost control. The sooner you can get back in control of things around you in your immediate environment, the quicker your anxiety will drop from a 10 back down to a 2. When I am anxious or having trouble like that I grab a pencil and paper and write down the time and the number from one to ten where I am at with the level of anxiety. I have noticed over the years that that log I create while feeling anxious seldom goes more than fifteen minutes, tops. This in itself has a calming effect on me, it really does, because I know I have a pattern of coming out of anxiety or anxious feelings in fifteen minutes or less and it helps me frame it so it is no longer a runaway train of my emotions. I would encourage people to make a list of everything which works to cancel the anxiety. Now, to answer your question: My own anxiety arises naturally from my scary descriptions to myself of how I am feeling at the time, and the more I describe that nuts feeling, the worse it gets. I have learned to just stay with it and not talk to myself about it, but to just watch it in silence, instead. When it finds it doesn't have a willing audience or victim, it moves on much faster.

Anxiety is a multisystem response to a perceived threat or danger. It reflects a combination of biochemical changes in the body, the patient's personal history and memory, and the social situation. As far as we know, anxiety is a uniquely human experience.
Although anxiety is related to fear, it is not the same thing. Fear is a direct, focused response to a specific event or object, and the person is consciously aware of it. Most people will feel fear if someone points a loaded gun at them or if they see a tornado forming on the horizon. They also will recognize that they are afraid. Anxiety, on the other hand, is often unfocused, vague, and hard to pin down to a specific cause. In this form it is called free-floating anxiety.

Your body conditions itself to produce adrenaline in certain situations. Anxiety results when the body doesn't know what to do with this excess adrenalin. It just sort of bottles up inside of us.

Sometimes this process happens for apparently no reason causing unpleasant panic attacks, or severe anxiety. Its a disorder that nobody fully understands.

I just got it - out of the blue and for no apparent reason! Looking at it now it seems it was all down to the stress of my horrible job at the time! - my body just had enough and decided to take it out on me through a massive anxiety attack! Horrible thing to go through!
