This is warning.... about 3 years ago I helped my daughter out by purchasing a subscription through her school to readers digest... approx. a year ago I asked them numerous times to cancel the subscription and not send any more.. they continued to send books.. I sent them back along with additional requests to cancel subscrition. Then we moved and the books stopped showing up even though we had our mail forwarded to our new address so I asumed the subscription was cancelled and no more monies were owed.....I just recently recieved a call from a collection agency regarding monies owed to Readers digest. I called readers digest to inquire and was told that I had to paythe bill. Please take this as a warning to not subscribe to them because the will RIP YOU OFF!!!!! they are the worst company I have ever had the displeasure to deal with

Ouch. ; ;

I'm sorry to hear that.

I am curious though, did you ever call customer service and speak with a Representative to cancel?

That'd be about the only way I'd trust canceling a subscription type item.

Send a written letter to the Better Business Bureau. Call them first to know what to write and what to do. Do NOT pay the bill. When you send the letter, send a copy to Readers digest.

I did this once in a similar situation and won. Companies are terrified of being turned into the Better Business Bureau. In fact, I have won twice-once by actually turning the company in, and another time by threatening to do so.

Plenty of other mail order companies do that. I was once contacted by one I had stopped dealing with for £50 they claimed I owed, when I had paid promptly, by cheque, and I had to get bank evidence that I had paid them. This is a common problem. I hope you took this matter further, since obviously you don't owe them a dime. There are customer organisations out there that will help.
