His back is hurting, his leg is numb- we dont know if it's bulging, herniated or slipped. I was wondering- is it safe to walk on his back to make him feel better?

Have him lay on the floor and put his legs up on a footstool.
or even the coffee table and rest in that L shaped position for about 30 minutes. It sounds like he has a pinched nerve. It is identified by the fact that his leg is numb. It will improve as the nerve becomes unpinched.

He needs to try to sleep in this position with sofa cushions under his legs to keep them in the L shape over night if possible.

A cold pack on it will help reduce the swelling. Ibuprofen or aspirin will help the pain.

No... unless you're trained in ashiatsu, the art of massaging someone with your feet, usually why stabalizing & supporting your weight with a bar.... you could do serious damage.
Unless you're are trained in anatomy of the muscles, kinesiology or other similiar training, I would avoid doing home treatment.

people have to go to school & train on people before being able to treat these conditions, and unless you have that training, send him to someone who does.

It sounds like he may have a case of pseudo sciatica & it could have been caused by a number of things... he needs to see either a reputable chiropractor, osteopath or massage therapist.
The average medical doctor will only treat these issues with drugs which mask the symptoms, and the other practitioners (as long as they are reputable & properly trained, check if they're licensed) will work towards restoring optimal function... a chiropractor will take xrays, and a good massage therapist will do a postural analysis.... if they think an MRI is important to see if there may be a possible slipped or bulging disc, I hope he has health insurance, they're expensive.

make sure he's:
Drinking plenty of water
Taking in proper nutrition of a balanced diet rich in OMega3 fatty acids
If in pain, with heat & inflammation in his back, apply ice up to 15-20 minutes at a time, allowing the tissue to heat up before re-applying.

Take him to see someone who's licensed & recommended, without proper training, you may do more harm than good!

I def. would not walk on your dad's back! You might injure his spine or discs! I would recommend that as soon as he can that your dad make an appt. to see a doctor and get an X-ray or an MRI. His back pain might be the result of nerve damage as well! Have him see a Dr. so that he can get looked at and hopefully put an end to this pain! Good luck and hope Dad gets well soon!

i wouldn't do anything if you are having second thoughts. what if you step on the wrong part and make his legs numb permanently? you need to schedule an appointment with a chiropractor or a physician.

walking on his back won't make a herniated disc worse. as long as you're not morbidly obese and you're not going to crush him under your weight, then it should be safe.

Make him an ice pack (fill empty pepsi bottles and freeze)
20 min ice works miracles, then fill 2 bottles with hot water.
Then massage his back starting at the bottom middle of back and workin up.
