Amsterdam Schiphol is less crowded, so faster through immigration and less chance of long lines, lost bags, delays, etc. Heathrow is huge and too busy for me.
If you're just going to change planes, AMS would probably be less hassle with less chance of missing your connections.
They're both clean, expensive, and have the same kind of services.
Finally, ask yourself if you got stranded in london or Amsterdam which would you prefer? I'd rather be stranded in AMSTERDAM.

I've flown through both airports and connected at both airports. In most respects there is nothing to choose between them. Here are the key differences:
[1] Heathrow has 4 terminals, and in a year or so it will have five. Amsterdam has just one, but it is huge!
[2] Due to above, London Heathrow is more likely to lose your connecting baggage.
[3] London has far more direct and nonstop flights to more cities all over the world, more often, than Amsterdam. Therefore there is more choice if you are making a connection.
[4] Heathrow has special dedicated express trains to the city, taking 15 minutes, and running every quarter of an hour. Amsterdam has direct train services, not quite so fast, but going to many cities in Holland, and with easy connections to other cities in other countries.
[5] Due to multi-terminals, walking distances in London tend to be less, unless you are doing an inter-terminal connection.
On balance, Amsterdam tends to be better. However, flights to Amsterdam tend to be more expensive. Your choice!

I always avoid going through Heathrow, specifically because their security rules are much stricter. You can only have one carryon bag, including the purse; I travel with much more.
