My 16 month old son has a bit of a pooh problem.
As soon as he has done a pooh he puts his hand into his nappy which then ends up with him being covered in pooh. nice i know.
I was just wondering wether any other toddler does this.

I think it is just his natural curiosity, and he can tell it's something powerful because of your (understandably) strong reaction. He has probably become aware that this substance appears in his diaper, and is interested in it. That is the job of a normal toddler: to investigate his world. I don't think he's trying to tell you to change the diaper, and I don't think it's your fault if he does it more than once. Who ever got a child this age to stop doing some behavior with only one correction? Also, I don't think it necessarily indicates toilet readiness. I have heard of several normal children doing this, and the behavior does not continue for long. You may even try exhibiting less of a reaction while cleaning him up: sometimes it's the strong reaction from the parent that continues the child's interest.

Yes I remember it well! I suppose it's just curiosity really. I can understand that you might find it a little strange but it's just all part of his normal development, he's got to the stage when he's aware of his bodily functions and maybe is ready to be trained. My daughter had an awful habit when she was first potty trained she'd do a poo and then think it was a good idea to taste it, I had to keep an eye on her for a while, I mentioned it at the baby clinic and apparently it's quite common for little ones to have a fascination with their own motions. Needless so say she's grown up to be a perfectly normal adult without any disgusting toilet habits and at the moment she is having her own dilemmas trying to toilet train my very determined grandson who thinks it's a great idea to wee behind her new curtains. Kids!!

My son, who is now 4, woke up from a nap when he was your son's age and took off his dirty diaper and smeared his poo all over himself and his crib. He had it all over his face, I could only see eyes and teeth! After scrubbing him and the crib, I told him that it was a no no, etc. But I just didn't make a big deal out of it, and it was a one time thing. My now 2 1/2 year old son will occasionally put his fingers in his diaper and show the poo, but I don't make a big deal out of it. Just say OOOH Nasty! Things like that. But I think it is just part of a child becoming aware of it. And if he gets attention over it it may encourage it to continue. Good luck. Kids are unpredictable.

Just be grateful he's not taking his nappy off and smearing it around the house! My neighbours child went through a phase of doing it. They are just being inquisitive. He will learn that it's not nice and then stop doing it....then he will start doing something else and the cycle continues!

Ignore the remark about he should be out of nappies at 16 months! If u pottty train too early he might not be ready .however u must stop him doing this, it's unhealthy but natural for him to want to feel what it's like but do try and stop it now before it becomes a habit!

I agree with the sippy cup, you take it away, let him cry his little heart out about it, but when he gets thirsty enough, he will cave, it just a test of wills. You might also try enticing liquids such as chocolate milk, its hard to pass up liquid candy in a big boy cup! As for the food issues, kids are weird. Not to mention the kids got you pegged as the pushover you are (like most of us moms) so just stick to your guns, cut the slices and when he gets hungry enough he'll eat what you serve. Trust me, you just have to stay strong and put the kid in his place. YOU ARE THE BOSS!!! Mine is 2 on may 5th, so I feel your pain. Good luck mommy!!

He is only 16 months old maybe if he is doing this you should try starting potty training might be his way of say 'Look what i have done' if he is a little to unsure maybe he should wear a proper vest with popper buttons underneath, good luck !

A lot of toddlers go through that stage it's just he is going through the felling different textures stage and does not know any better. He might get to the place he does not wanna walk bare foot because he don't like the way the floor feel under his feet. He will grow out of it or just introduce him to the potty.

My son did this too.I think it was a sign of discomfort he didn't like the feeling of the poo in his nappy. He was a little bit older than your son is now.I started to potty train him and that seemed to cure the problem.
