My boyfriends parents have a 6 year old Pom. with just absolutly terrbile breath. The problem with these dog treats ment for breath is that he (the dog) doesnt like them. This dog doesnt like any kind of hard treats, only soft like beggin' strips, things on that line. I know that with dogs, even chewing on rawhide helps a little bit, but he doesnt like those kind of things. Any ideas??

Small breeds are prone to bad breath and bad teeth. It's possible that he has an abscessed tooth (or teeth) and he needs his teeth cleaned.
I have to take my Poms in every other year for their dental cleanings/extractions.

The treats and washes for doggie breathe usually do not work even if the dog eats them everyday. Try adding some mint or parsley to the food. If the dog is eating wet food then the teeth need to be brushed every day to remove all the food residue which will rot and cause the bad breath. The vet should want the teeth to be cleaned at least once if not twice a year. I would check with the vet to see about getting the teeth cleaned.

The dog needs a dental cleaning, especially considering it is six years old. The plaque will build infection which is causing the bad breath. (known as halitosis). It might seem like such a minor thing but it can cause horrible, horrible problems. The dog will have a painful mouth, it will begin to loose teeth, and eventually it can cause heart failure! (I know i sounds weird, but the bacteria from it's mouth travels straight to the heart!). Poms are just one of those breeds that are very prone to bad teeth,, if it's teeth aren't horribly bad. then you can try something like CET chews, science diet dental formula or greenies.

Please, don't give into the poms' stubbornness. I had a poodle like that and he lost all of his teeth because I could not keep them clean He got soft food also because I thought he would not eat hard dry food. . If the Pom will let y'all brush it's teeth, that might help. Mine was very small and If I had tried to hold his head and do this, it would have broken his neck. His breath wasn't that bad though. You may need to have the dogs' tonsils checked.Things like this can cause bad breath also.

Get his teeth cleaned. At 6 the vet might not be the best choice because they put the dog under, but I go to the non-anesthetic place and my Yorke is 11 and it goes very well. Ask at any Pet store or adoption place. Or a grooming shop. Try and find a pet magazine they list places. Good luck.,

the dog needs a dental cleaning and polishing. bad breath/teeth can lead to a host of other internal problems- liver disease and others- from the bacteria that build up behind the plaque and tartar in the mouth. There is now a dental vaccine to help reduce the amount of this bacteria. Have a vet visit, and dentistry ASAP.

There is only one solution, take doggie to the vet for a dental cleaning. The bad breath is the decayed teeth and gums. If left untreated it can cause an infection that will destroy the gums, jaw bones, and even infect other of his little organs.
