They're both 1 watt LEDs - so their light source is the same brightness.

How each unit diffuses that light power should be what makes you determine which is better.

I have the Cateye, and it's pretty good, but reading the specs of the Blackburn I'd say it's the better light since it has 2 power settings, whereas the Cateye is on/off only.

EDIT: The HL-EL500 you're talking about is actually called the HL-EL350 (see Cateye links below). Unless you mean the HL-500 which is Halogen. In which case, while a comparison will show that the Cateye Halogen is brighter, it is most definitely not the better light. LED light is way better for night riding than any Halogen. Much whiter glow, which gives a better view than the Gold glow of a Halogen.

One vote for the Cateye.
It advertises 3.5 watts versus 45 lumens for the Blackburn.
