I don't; I'm a Catholic and I as well as mainstream Protestants regard them as a loonie fringe. So they think the world is 6,000 years old,so what? The English have a Flat Earth Society; is that a typical English belief? Why are atheists so obsessed with fundies when everyone else consideres them laughable? And do they seriously think they represent the mainstream of Christian thought? That's pretty ill-informed,isn't it?

How are they legislating beliefs? The Supreme Court has consistently ruled against all their efforts. They only influence our policy on Isreal which is the one thing atheists don't want to talk about since it involves criticising jews. As for this museum,so what? Who cares? They can run a museum and promote their views. It's a free country.

Well, they make a nuisance of themselves, but I don't much care what they think (to the extent we can call what they do thinking.) They want to mess with the public school curriculum, they get in your face with huge billboards (at least here in the mid-west; California does not permit such nonsense), in print ads everywhere, and I am told that if I watched television, they would get in my face there, as well. Good reason to be glad I do not have a TV.
Basically, they are making Americans look foolish to the rest of the world. If you cruise this category for awhile, you will note that Europeans tend to get the impression this is a nation dominated by fundamentalists, when in fact they are a real minority. A pushy minority which currently seems to wield a good bit of political power, but still a minority.

The courts have only ruled against fundie efforts because people like us make a big stink over what the fundies are trying to do. No opposition means it would pass. The evidence that this is true is some of the STUPID things that fundies have already gotten past the courts years ago. There should be an impenetrable wall between church and state but it's been penetrated many times before and was only done mostly after the founding fathers had died off.
Originally there wasn't led prayer in schools, god mentioned on our money, 'under god' in the Pledge of Allegiance. We still have fundies trying to stop someone else from having an abortion, from legally marrying someone they love. Fundies want to legislate their version of sexual morality which they themselves do not follow. They're hypocrites and I'm not going to be FORCED to live like a Christian whether I like it or not. I flat refuse.

I've known some atheists who are more well-informed about Christian beliefs, including the distinctions among us, than many Christians. Perhaps they just find fringe fundamentalism entertaining.

If all they did was think, there would be no harm done... the problem is what they do. Religion teaches hatred and intolerance toward people who do not share the same beliefs. The most dangerous are the religious extremist who believe God is on their side and wish to spark a religious war and usher in Armageddon.

Well, the fundamentalists in this society are prohibiting those who are a minority to have full rights like I was "promised" to have as an American citizen. I can't get married and have the benefits of a regular heterosexual couple, so I am going to care what they think.
I consider everyone to be loonie. ^_^

Grendy Boy, atheists are right to wonder about Fundies because they, the Fundies, want America to become a theocracy where they would tell you and everybody else how to live, eat, breathe, vote, make love, etc., etc....you know, like Iran.

It's always good to have both sides of the story that way when you make your decision you know you've done your research..
Maybe being in need of a laugh has something to do with it also

"So they think the world is 6,000 years old,so what?" So some of them actually object to including factual information in pamphlets about the Grand Canyon because it conflicts with their "Young Earth" views. When they start trying to replace REALITY with their theolofy then I get miffed. Don't YOU??

Because fundies are in the majority in my country. Fundies are making the laws that inhibit my freedom and impose their beliefs on all people. I do not care what they believe -- but I will not stand by and let them LEGISLATE their beliefs.

Because in America, they control our government. Laugh at them if you want. But I take it very seriously.
In the documentary "Bible Camp" an evangelical leader stated that she wanted to see more Christians in America willing to lay down their lives for Jesus, the same way that Muslims do in Middle East. If you don't see a problem with that, then it's a bigger problem than I had imagined.
